SOTD 7/31 Arko? Polo!

07312014

Pre: Shave Secret
Brush: VDH Boar Brush
Soap: Arko (puck)
Razor: Frankentech
Blade:  Racer Super Stainless (3)
Splash:  Wal-Mart Witch Hazel 86%
Post: Nivea Sensitive ASB & Master Well Bay Rum AS

I think I am just resigned to not create good lather with the Arko puck.  I’ve tried more water, less water, badger & boar brushes, super loading, etc.  I just can’t get consistent lasting lather.  That being said I still love Arko.  Well the scent anyway.  And it protects my skin well enough.  I don’t know how well it would do without using a PSO but I’m not willing to experiment and find out.

Last shave on the Racer SS blade.  Still decently sharp.  Still smooth.  Had to do a bit of touch up afterwards but ended up a DFS.  I think I would place the Racer SS between the Derby Extra and the Gillette Silver Blue.  Not in my top 5 but a decent go to blade in a pinch.  I notice I am leaning more and more toward the more aggressive razor/blade combinations.  I think I’m about ready to try a slant.  With my fine hair and low growth I’m sure I don’t NEED a slant, but I do want to try one.  And add it to the collection.  Now to decide on which one to get.  Any suggestions?  Have a good Thursday!

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Lime
Brush: Shea Moisture Synthetic
Soap: Arko Men – Cool
Razor: Maggard Razors MR3
Blade:  Gillette Wilkinson Sword (3)
Splash:  Wal-Mart Witch Hazel 86%

Had a rough night.  Chico isn’t well and was restless all night.  Consequently I was awake most of the night.  So I was groggy, irritable, and feeling rushed this morning.  Surprisingly still eeked a decent shave!

I went with cold water to save time.  The Arko Men cream performed well.  Although I feel like the same amount made a bit more lather with hot water.  I’ll have to watch that a bit closer next time.  I like the Arko cream but it is really nothing like the Arko puck to me.  The lather is different, the scent is totally different.  As a matter of fact, I barely detect a scent at all.  Not a deal breaker.  This is another one of those soaps that the very low price point makes up for any minor negatives.  Overall a very decent value.

Last shave on the Wilkinson.  Still super sharp and very smooth.  Definitely can push this one past 3 shaves.  Combined with the MR3, I got a really close BBS shave with only a couple of tiny weepers.  Speaking of Maggards, I see that they have a new solid steel handle.  I want it!  I’m thinking about matching it up to the New I picked up last Sunday.  That sounds like a match made in heaven!  Hope your day was great!

SOTD 7/29 Open Comb Comparison

07292014

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Lime
Brush: GBS Pure Badger
Soap: TOBS – Avacado
Razor: Merkur 41C 1904 OC
Blade: Astra SP (4)
Splash:  Shea Moisture Shave Tea Tree Herbal Bump Preventer
Post:  Aubrey Organics City Rhythms AS Balm & Master Well bay Rum AS

If you like the smell of avocados, then this soap is for you!  The scent is very strong and stays pretty prevalent throughout the shave.  Not my favorite smell but it’s not unpleasant. I’m not really into herbal scents.  But of course being a TOBS soap the lather is first rate!

Had to try the 41C again after using the New long comb.  I have to say the New out shaves the Merkur by a long shot.  I think part of that reason may have to do with blade choices.  I bet if I put a more aggressive blade in the Merkur, it would shave closer to the performance of the New. Not to knock the Merkur.  I actually do really like the head.  I’m not the biggest fan of the handle though.  I love the way it looks, but it doesn’t doesn’t inspire confidence in its grip.  Case in point, I did indeed drop the razor while shaving this morning.  No damage to it thankfully.  Or to me lol  I’m thinking of trying a different handle.  Maybe a Bulldog, or the Maggard Razors MR3 handle.  Make a Franken-Merkur 🙂

Last shave on the Astra.  Pushed it to 4 accidentally.  Lost track again.  But it didn’t affect the shave.  I probably could have gone a 5th shave on this blade.  I think the Astra SP may be my first 100 blade purchase.  Happy Tuesday!

SOTD 7/28 Shaving with history (Menthol Monday)

07282014

Pre: Shave Secret
Brush: VDH Boar Brush
Soap: Maggard Razors – Orange Menthol
Razor: ’32 -40 Gillette New Long Comb Bar Handle
Blade: Derby Platinum
Splash:  Wal-Mart Witch Hazel 86%
Post:  Brute Original Fragrance Moisturizing ASB & Fine Classic AS – Platinum

A really enjoyable shave this morning.  Primarily because of my “weapon” of choice today!  Sunday, we were out wandering southwest Michigan and ended up in Niles.  Downtown Niles is antique store central!  Ended up hitting several (i think 6 or 7) stores.  Unfortunately, most of them had nothing shaving related.  The couple that did, mostly had mediocre straights although one did have a complete Rolls Razor in great condition, but I wasn’t really interested in it.  Just as I was about to write off the excursion as a zero, I found todays shaver!  My first vintage open comb!  And the price was only $5!  Of course I snatched it up.  Got home and immediately cleaned and sanitized it.  This was a user not a show piece!

And use it I did!  It may look a little beat up and worse for wear, but it shaves like a pro!  It looked a bit aggressive, so I tossed in a pretty mild blade, a Derby Platinum.  Wasn’t a bad choice but I over estimated its aggressiveness.  I should have tried a Voskhod or a Persona Red.  Regardless, I ended up with a great DFS shave.  The teeth issues (missing tooth, 3 bent) of the New didn’t seem to affect the shave at all.  In fact, the razor is a beast of a lather catcher!  I like how is holds the lather instead of pushing it around.

Maggards Orange Menthol just may be my new favorite menthol soap scent.  I love the fresh orange scent.  It’s a real citrus scent that’s refreshing.  And this soap is icy!  The menthol builds with each pass and lasts for a while after the shave.  I topped it off with the Fine Platinum as I do with every Menthol Monday to keep the freeze going a bit.  Also debuted a new after shave balm by Brute.  Well, new for me.  So far it seems pretty decent. The ingredient list dosen’t seem any worse than the Nivea or Dove ASBs I use.  The Brute scent is nice and subtle.  Didn’t clash with the Fine at all.  Here’s to a productive week!

SOTD 7/26 A Summer Saturday

07262014

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Lime
Brush: Shea Moisture Synthetic
Soap: Derby Shaving Cream – Lemon
Razor: ’66 Gillette Slim Adjustable
Blade: Gillette Silver Blue (2)
Splash:  Wal-Mart Witch Hazel 86%
Post:  Dove Men+Care ASB & Fine Classic AS – Platinum

A nice relaxing shave this morning.  Everything kind of fell into place after having a frustrating evening last night.  I got a new flat screen TV finally, after resisting for years because I really didn’t see a need.  But anyway I finally picked one up, a smart TV.  You’d think that a guy that works with computers for a living could setup an LED HDTV right?  Well apparently not.  It was a very frustrating experience for some very asinine reason which I wont get into in this post.  But I ended up getting it done and I love my new tv!

Back to the shave, I am really liking the Slim.  Left it on 6 for today’s shave.  The Silver Blue blade was still nicely sharp and very smooth.  Got a total BBS shave with no weepers or tugging.  This was my second time using the Derby cream.  It’s a pretty solid performer and the Lemon scent goes nice with the Lime PSO.  Nothing cloying or candy-like, just a nice refreshing citrus scent.  Lathers very easy and feels pretty protective.  At it’s low price point and solid performance I will definitely be repurchasing.

I ended the shave today with a splash of the Fine Platinum.  Surprisingly it didn’t clash with the citrus combo.  In retrospect the Clubman probably would have been more complimentary but eh, as long as I smell good right?  Have a great Saturday!

SOTD 7/25 Dr. Makes a House Call…

07252014

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Lime
Brush: GBS Pure Badger
Soap: Dr. Harris – Windsor
Razor: Gillette TTO Black Handle
Blade: Sputnik (4)!
Splash:  Shea Moisture Shave Tea Tree Herbal Bump Preventer
Post:  Nivea Sensitive ASB + Fine Classic AS – Platinum

Dr. Harris Windsor is another one of those soaps that I just can’t catch the scent. I don’t know if its so subtle my nose can’t pick it up, or if it is just really faint.  I can kind of detect a slight herbal thing going on but thats about it.  Awesome lather though!  It’s feels really protective also, with good razor glide.  Skin didn’t feel dry between passes.

I accidentally pushed the Sputnik to a 4th shave.  Forgot to remove it after the 3rd shave, so when I grabbed the Black handle this morning I didn’t even think to check it.  But you know what, it worked out great anyway.  The Sputnik blade felt just as sharp as the first shave.  Smooth with no tugging.  Only a couple tiny weepers that were my fault, on the back of the dome which is a repeat problem area for me.  Definitely secured a spot in my permanent blade rotation.

Between my two Super Speeds, I’m leaning toward the Black handle as the better shaver.  Not by a huge margin, but I feel I get just a touch closer with it.  In the Super Speed hierarchy I’m told the Black Handle falls about mid-range as far as the aggression level.  I need to try out a Red Tip now.  TGIF!!

SOTD 7/23 It’s Going to Be Close

07242014

Pre: Shave Secret
Brush: VDH Boar Brush
Soap: Soap Commander Refreshment – Sweet Tea
Razor: Maggard Razors MR3
Blade: Gillette Wilkinson Sword (2)
Splash:  Wal-Mart Witch Hazel 86%
Post:  Dove Men+Care ASB & Aqua Velva Musk

Excellent shave today!  The Soap Commander Sweet Tea is a lathering beast!  I just press about a quarter sized smidgen into the bottom of my bowl (I have a sample, not a tin), and it makes more than enough rich lather for 3 passes on the dome and neck.  It’s pretty slick feeling.  The scent is pretty awesome also as it really smells like tea to me.  Kind of makes my  mouth water a bit LOL

The combo of the MR3 and the Wilkinson blade still impresses me!  The MR3 has definitely earned its spot as a daily shaver. I’m trying to narrow it down to just 3 or 4 razors, but more on that later.  This mornings shave was super smooth and close!  No touch up needed and that RARELY ever happens.  I’m still rubbing my head its so smooth..

Finished up with the Aqua Velva musk.  I like the scent of that after shave but it dosen’t seem to linger long unlike my Pinaud or my Master Well after shaves.  Even the Aqua Velva Classic Blue seems to last longer.  I need to expand my after shaves and balms.  Maybe thats what I’ll look for this weekend.  I’m really trying not to buy anymore razors.  If I end up with a Black Beauty, I’m pretty much set for what I want.  Yeah yeah, I would love a Fat Boy, but I don’t  have to have one.  Maybe one more straight.  But otherwise hardware-wise I’m good.  You believe me don’t you? 😉  Enjoy your Thursday!

SOTD 7/23 Night & Day

07232014

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Lime
Brush: Shea Moisture Synthetic
Soap: TOBS – Almond
Razor: Merkur 41C 1904 OC
Blade: Astra SP (2)
Splash:  Wal-Mart Witch Hazel 86%
Post:  Nivea Sensitive ASB & Aqua Velva Ice Blue Classic

Talk about a night & day shave!  After shaving yesterday with the Slim set on 6, using the Merkur this morning felt like I was using a butter knife!  I didn’t think there would be that big of a difference but man was I wrong!  I felt like I had to go over certain areas multiple times.  I know it wasn’t the blade.  It’s only the 2nd shave on the Astra SP.  They are normally good for at least 3 shaves with me, more like 4.  The feedback from the razor was almost non-existent.  The only thing I can think of is that I got such a close shave from the Slim yesterday that there was barely anything for the Merkur to do LOL

That aside, the TOBS Almond had my bathroom smelling excellent, even with a cold water shave.  I’ve been doing cold shaves on Wednesdays to save time as its my early morning.  The lather today was rich and creamy.  Almost wish I had more to shave!

Didn’t get to post my SOTD until this afternoon due to the time crunch this morning.  Somehow I got behind and ended having to rush off to my meeting.  Still ended up with a DFS.  Just had to work harder for it LOL  Hope your day was productive!

SOTD 7/22 There’s a Slim Chance…

07222014

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Lime
Brush: GBS Pure Badger
Soap: Edwin Jager – Lime & Pomegranate
Razor: ’66 Gillette Slim Adjustable
Blade: Gillette Silver Blue
Splash:  Shea Moisture Shave Tea Tree Herbal Bump Preventer
Post:  Nivea Sensitive ASB & Master Well Bay Rum AS

WOOT! New razor!  That’s right the mailman brought me a little bundle of joy yesterday.  What was it you say?  Well I’m gonna tell you.  It was a 1966 Gillette Slim Adjustable!  Now if you’ve been reading this blog for a bit, you’ll know that the Slim Adjustable was on my list of “must haves”.  Only one year off from my birth year, but I’ll take it!  Mechanically sound, it does have some what looks like plate loss on the head and some minor discoloration on the handle.  So it’s not the prettiest razor I have but it is easily the sexiest!

In the inaugural shave for this razor I had to go classic and tossed in a Gillette Silver Blue blade.  Perfect combo!  Started out the shave with the Slim set on 3. By the 3rd pass I had bumped it up to 6 with no issues.  The Silver Blue blade was sharp and totally smooth.  The Slim performed like the champ it was back in its heyday.  Ended up with a BBS front to back!  I didn’t have to chase the baby at all!  The Slim handed it to me LOL

Finished off my sample of the EJ Lime & Pomegranate.  Love the scent and the lather of this soap.  I will be repurchasing this one just as soon as i work down the collection I currently have.  I think I’m addicted to buying soaps 🙂  Of course there are worse things to be addicted too..  Ended this mornings great classic shave with a splash of old school bay Rum.  I feel and smell like I just had a shave at the barber!  Which by the way, is on my “to do list”.  Just as soon as I find a local barber that does head shaves…  Have a great Tuesday!

SOTD 7/21/2014 Who’s the Chilliest?

07212014

Pre: Shave Secret
Brush: VDH Boar Brush
Soap: RazoRock Brain Freeze
Razor: Frankentech
Blade: Racer Super Stainless (2)
Splash:  Wal-Mart Witch Hazel 86%
Post:  Dove Men+Care ASB

After experiencing the dome numbing cold of HTGAM Frost Byte, I had to go back and re-visit Brain Freeze for comparison.  Although Brain Freeze does provide for a frosty shaving experience, especially in cold water, I have to give the “Ice King” title to Frost Byte!  That soaps icy-ness just continues to build through out the shave till I thought I was going to get frost bite!  I know bad pun but you get what I’m saying?

Now don’t get the idea that I’m bagging on Brain Freeze.  I love that soap.  It is frosty and lathers easily and has a nice scent.  It is easily one of the top performers in my modest soap/cream collection.  It will definitely remain in the rotation.  But the frosty championship stays with Frost Byte, until a new challenger comes forth.  Like Yeti Snot.  That will probably be my next menthol acquisition, unless someone thinks there’s a better choice.  Let me know!

Second shave on the Racer blade.  Not a bad shave.  Not tugging,  Seemed decently sharp.  No weepers.  Had to do some touch up after, but still a DFS.  Not one of my top blades but will do in a pinch.  I’m kind of excited as I should be having some mail calls this week.  The thing is, I don’t know what they are!  Ooh surprises 😉
