SOTD 9/30 Tabac or Not Tabac, Is That the Question?

Pre: Shave Secret
Brush: Shea Moisturizer Synthetic
Soap: Tabac
Razor:  Gillette TTO Black Handle
Blade:  Blue Bird Hi-Stainless
Splash:  Humphreys Alcohol Free Cucumber Melon Witch Hazel Facial Toner
Post: Nivea Sensitive ASB & Fine Platinum AS

Back to the Tabac!  I have to admit it’s growing on me.  I’m still so so about the scent.  But I think I’ve got the lather dialed in now.  This morning it was very rich and luscious with lots of cushion and glide.  Very good skin feel between passes and afterwards.

New blade!  I paired a Blue Bird up with my black handled Super Speed.  Turned out to be a great choice.  I had never heard of Blue Bird blades before so I stuck them in a sampler I recently ordered from tryablade.  I’m glad I did.  This blade was super smooth and sharp.  I would compare it to a Gillette Silver Blue.  We will see how the rest of the shaves go with it but I’m pretty sure this will become one of my favorites.

Ended up with a DFS as I didn’t really “chase the baby” this morning due to the unknown blade.  Nicely smooth and skin feels good.  Feel like I’m gonna rock this Tuesday! 😉

SOTD 9/29 Sitting on the Dock of the Bay…

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Lime
Brush: Custom Boar by Steve Brown Swirl Handle
Soap: Col. Conks Famous Glycerin Shave Soap – Bay Rum
Razor:  ’30-’40s Clix Bakelite Razor
Blade:  Treet Platinum(3)
Splash:  Thayers Natural Remedies Lemon Witch Hazel w/ Aloe Vera Astringent
Post: Pacific Shaving Moisturizer & Master Well Bay Rum AS

Kicking off a new work week with another trip to the bay with the Colonel.  Col. Conks has many die hard fans of it’s soap so I’m not going to give up on it.  It took me awhile to figure out that Arko puck, but now I love it.  Hoping the Conks turns out the same way.

3rd time with the Conks.  The second time was much better than the first try, but still kind of ‘meh’.  This time, well, was still kind of blah.  Don’t get me wrong, Col. Conks is a decent cheap soap puck.  It lathers decently with lots of water.  The scent is super faint.  About average cushion.  Could use more glide.  Still feels a little dry between passes.  But for the price I would recommend it.  I think if I had never used any artisan soaps I would like this soap better.  But alas, “…I have been to the mountain top!” and I can’t look back now LOL

I am still amazed at how well this tiny, lightweight, plastic (bakelite) razor shaves!  The Treet was on its 3rd shave but it felt as sharp as day one!  Smooth, and as close as can be!  I have too many razors in my rotation as it is, but this Clix razor just may edge its way into it!

It’s just another manic Monday!

SOTD 9/27 Like Butter baby!

Pre: Sir Hare Bald Head Care Shaving Oil – Beach Bum
Brush: Omega 48 Pro Boar (Brushzilla)
Soap: Genuine Ogalalla Bay Rum Shave Stick – Bay Rum & Lemon Grass
Razor:   ’66 Gillette Slim Adjustable
Blade:  Gillette Silver Blue (3)
Splash:  Wal-Mart Witch hazel 86%
Post: Gillette Gel ASB & Aqua Velva Classic Ice Blue

Whew late night post.  Been a hectic day but in a good way.  Worked then spent the evening watching hot air balloons and listening to some guy beat box classic rock songs and a Michael Jackson oldies revue. Yep.  Actually wasn’t horrible.  A pretty decent ending to a day that started with a great shave.

Used my Slim  (on setting 5) paired with a Silver Blue blade on it’s 3rd shave.  The blade was still very sharp and smooth.  Gave a very close shave with no errors.  This shave confirmed the move of the Silver Blue blades into my top 5 blades.

I love using my Ogalalla shave stick.  After the pre-shave oil, i re-wet my head then rub that “butter” all over the dome.  Then with a fairly damp brush I head lather.  Love how the scent just kind of wraps around my face with that gorgeous smell.  The soap provides lots of cushion and is decently slick.  If you havent tried it, I suggest you do, especially if you like the bay rum scent.  The addition of the lemon grass makes for a delicious combination.

Ended with a super close BBS.  Hope your Saturday went well!

SOTD 9/26 Friday Faves!

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Lime
Brush: Custom Boar by Steve Neon Barber Handle (The Force)
Soap: Maggard Razors – Lime & Bergamot
Razor:  ’88 Gillette Super Adjustable – Black Beauty
Blade:  Astra SP(3)
Splash:  Thayers Natural Remedies Lemon Witch Hazel w/ Aloe Vera Astringent
Post: Nivea Sensitive ASB & Master Well Bay Rum AS

Today was a shave of favorites!  The Black Beauty has edged into the number one spot for favorite razor!  My Slim is a close second, but the longer handle of the Super Adjustable 109 pushed it to the front.  Pairing it with my favorite blade, the Astra SP, has been nothing but near perfect.  Even though the blade was on it’s 3rd use, it was totally smooth, sharp, and comfortable.  If I didn’t have so many great razors and blades I’d use this combo every day! 🙂

Used my favorite soap, Maggard Razors Lime & Bergamot.  It is such a delicious scent and easy to build great lather with.  I really love Maggard soaps in general and will be exploring more made by their artisan supplier.  Apparently she makes soaps under her own label and for other shave companies.  Definitely on my buy list!

The Thayers lemon witch hazel is my favorite astringent both for its sweet scent, and for its soothing, toning properties.  Same with the Nivea Sensitive ASB.  It’s my favorite balm because it’s moisturizing, a little goes along way, and it’s relatively cheap.  Ended the shave with my favorite after shave.  I really love the Bay Rum scent.  As much as I like Pinaud, I have to put the Master Well in the numero uno slot.

TGIF!  Shave like its 1959!

SOTD 9/25 I Got the Blues…

Pre: Shave Secret
Brush: GBS Pure Badger
Soap: TOBS – Jermyn Street
Razor:  ’32 -40 Gillette New Long Comb w/ Tech Ball handle
Blade:  Gillette Super Blue (Chinese) / Astra SP
Splash:  Humphreys Alcohol Free Cucumber Melon Witch Hazel Facial Toner
Post: Brut Original Fragrance Moisturizing ASB & Aqua Velva Musk

I am kind of bummed.  I hate to admit it, but this morning, for the first time since I started shaving ever; I was disappointed with a Gillette blade!  I know, I can’t believe it either but it’s true.  Saying I was disappointed is being very generous really.  This blade was absolutely HORRIBLE.  Right from the start it was super rough with lots of tugging & skipping.  I had to make sure the blade was actually positioned and tightened correctly it was so bad!  I tried to make a go of it anyway, but half way through the first pass (WTG) it was so rough that I had to pull the blade.  That is something that I have NEVER had to do before.  I’ve tossed blades after one use, but never had to stop mid-shave and switch blades.  I did this morning.  Popped in my go to blade, an Astra SP.  Everything was lovely from there on!  Sharp, smooth, and satisfied!

Pulled out the Jermyn Street today.  There are a lot of fans of this soap/scent so I thought I’d give it another go.  I’m pretty ambivalent about the scent.  It’s pleasant enough, just doesn’t really excite me LOL  The performance is TOBS standard luscious lather with plenty of cushion and decent glide.  This soap likes water.

Ended with a silky BBS even after the false start with the Chinese blade.  I will not be using this one again.  Well to be fair & objective I guess I should try one more but I doubt that todays blade was a fluke.  Ugh.

It’s thirsty Thursday!  Where’s my ale?

SOTD 9/24 Back Down the Rabbit Hole

Pre: None
Brush: None
Soap: Sir Hare Bald Head Care Shaving Oil – Beach Bum
Razor:  Merkur 41C 1904 OC
Blade:  Merkur Stainless Platinum Coated(2)
Splash:  None
Post: Pacific Shaving Moisturizer & Fine Classic Platinum AS

Being my usual time crunched Wednesday morning, I decided to try the Sir Hare shaving oil again to save time.  I’m pretty glad I did.  I have to say, it has to be the slickest oil I’ve shaved with.  Makes for a very comfortable shave.

I used the 41C with the Merkur blade on its second use.  The Merkur just glided through the shaving oil.  Very smooth shaving with no skipping or tugging.  The blade was still feeling decently sharp also.  It was a very enjoyable shave with no weepers or nicks.  As a matter of fact, it would have probably ended up a close BBS but its hard for me to tell where I’ve shaved without lather and I missed a couple of patches.  So I’d call the shave a DFS with touchups.

I’m even more of a fan of the scent of this oil.  It’s pungent in all the right ways.  Makes the bathroom smell great.  And the scent lingers after the shave.  Tried it today with the Fine Platinum.  Don’t know yet if that’s a good match but I can still smell the oil through the Fine.  I kind of like it.

Happy Hump Day!

SOTD 9/23 Have a Lemon PAL

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Lime
Brush: Shea Moisture Synthetic
Soap: Derby Shaving Cream – Lemon
Razor:  PAL Adjustable Injector Razor
Blade:  Schick Injector
Splash:  Humphreys Alcohol Free Cucumber Melon Witch Hazel Facial Toner
Post: Brut Original Fragrance Moisturizing ASB & Aqua Velva Ice Blue Classic

Been on a citrus vibe the last couple of days, so I decided to keep it going this morning!  Pulled out my tube of Derby cream.  One of my favorite cheap shaving creams.  Lathers great, and has a bright lemony scent.  Decent glide and cushion.  Performed as expected today.  I have yet to have a bad shave with this product.

Brought out the PAL.  Working with a new Schick blade.  Something subtle has changed with my PAL and I can’t figure out what it is.  I don’t know if it’s me or the razor.  All I do know is the shave isn’t like it was initially.  It’s not a smooth or comfortable shave.  I feel like the blade is scraping across my dome.  The slight burn of the witch hazel afterwards backs up this theory.  I feel like my angle of attack hasn’t changed, so maybe it’s the blade?  Schick injector blades have a good reputation.  It’s highly doubtful I have multiple duds in the same pack but I suppose it is possible.

I still ended up with a super close total BBS front to back.  One minor annoying weeper right at the front of my hairline.  Some minor irritation over my ears and in the nape of my neck.  The ASB soothed it pretty much.  Topped off with the classic Ice Blue.

Make today work for YOU!

SOTD 9/22 The Senator Likes It Cool

Pre: Shave Secret
Brush: VDH Kit Brush – Boar
Soap: Maggard Razors – Orange Menthol
Razor:  ’38-39 Gillette Senator TTO
Blade:  Gillette Wilkinson Sword(2)
Splash:  Thayers Natural Remedies Lemon Witch Hazel w/ Aloe Vera Astringent
Post: Nivea Sensitive ASB & Pinaud Clubman Classic

Great shave to kick off a new week!  It was time to to visit with the Senator again.  Didn’t want him to become too complacent lol

I think because I had just used the mild Super Speed Blue Tip, the Senator felt a tad bit aggressive.  Not uncomfortably so, but I definitely felt the blade on my dome.  The Wilkinson blade also felt a bit rough also.  Again,  not “bad” but just not as smooth as the first shave was, this being the second use on this blade.  So I pulled it after the shave.  No need to push my luck with this blade.  I have a whole new sampler I have yet to break into!

Finally used the last of my sample of Maggard Razors Orange menthol.  I really like this soap!  It’s a different consistency than the Lime & Bergamot.  It’s more solid, waxy.  Easy to scoop out of the sample jar and press into a bowl.  A great orange scent, more citrus than candy orange.  I’d rate the menthol on the lower side.  It’s there, but it takes a while to build up, and it doesn’t last very long.  None of that is a deal breaker for me.  I will definitely be ordering this.  I thought I didn’t have enough for this shave but I was gladly proven wrong.  Lot’s of lather from a quarter sized smidgen of soap.  Slightly thirsty soap but you are well rewarded for your efforts!

Ended up with a DFS.  Didn’t get as close as I wanted over my ears but didn’t want to push the blade.  Topped off with Pinaud.  Now of to work!  Chase your dreams!

SOTD 9/21 sunday, Sunday, SUNDAY!!!

Pre: Sir Hare Bald Head Care Shaving Oil – Beach Bum
Brush: Custom Boar by Steve Brown Swirl Handle
Soap: TOBS – Almond
Razor:  ’55 Gillette Super Speed Blue Tip
Blade:  Voskhod(2)
Splash:  Thayers Natural Remedies Lemon Witch Hazel w/ Aloe Vera Astringent
Post: Gillette Gel ASB

Started off the morning with a peaceful sunrise walk with Chico.  Came back to a relaxing shower and prep.  I decide to try out the Sir Hare oil as a pre-shave oil.  It works pretty well in that role.  It added some glide to the razor and a nose full of excellent scent! I can see this having a spot in my regular rotation as a PSO and occasional shave oil.  If you missed my review of it, read it here.

Was excited to try my new find from yesterdays excursions.  I pulled the Voskhod from my Super Speed Flair that had only one shave on it.  It paired nicely with the Blue Tip.  I’d say the shave of the Blue Tip is very comparable to the Flare and my Black Handle Super Speeds.  It gave me a smooth, comfortable, close & error free shave with minimal touch up afterwards.  From this shave I surmise the Blue, Black Handle, and the Flair are all on the same aggressiveness level.  Or so similar as too not matter.  I’m anxious to get a hold of a Black, and a Red Tip now.  Every time I think I have this RAD (razor acquisition disorder) mastered, I find something else! LOL

The TOBS performed as expected.  Awesomely.  An absolute ton of lather.  The almond scent went very well with the scent of the Sir hare shaving oil.  Hated for the shave to end.  What’s cool is the even 20 minutes after the shave, I am still getting whiffs of the oil scent.  Now I want a Pina Colada.  Yum.

SOTD 9/20 He Ain’t Heavy…

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Lime
Brush: Custom Boar by Steve Neon Barber Handle (The Force)
Soap: Maggard Razors – Lime & Bergamo
Razor:  ’30-’40s Clix Bakelite Razor
Blade:  Treet Platinum(2)
Splash:  Thayers Natural Remedies Lemon Witch Hazel w/ Aloe Vera Astringent
Post: Dove Men+Care ASB & Master Well Bay Rum AS

Excellent shave this morning!  As you may know I tend to prefer heavier razors.  I just feel more confident as far as grip and feel with them.  But I have to tell you this little bakelite razor is a BEAST!  It shaves so surprisingly well!  I mentioned before that it was very similar to my Tech, but now I actually think it shaves better than my Tech.  I know, blasphemy right? LOL

The Treet blade was on its 2nd use and still very sharp and smooth!  A great blade to use in less aggressive shavers.  No issues with tugging or pulling.  Achieved a BBS with minor buffing.

Pulled out my current favorite soap.  I actually accidentally added what I thought was too much water and the lather increased exponentially!  Ended up with way more than I needed.  But would rather have too much of a good thing than not enough right?  A ton of thick, creamy lather with lots of cushion and excellent glide.  Just based on performance alone, Maggard Soaps are in my top 3 so far.  The crazy good scent is bonus!

It’s Adventure Time!
