SOTD 3/30 Dragon Butt

03302015

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Cherry Sandalwood Vanilla
Brush: Custom Boar by Steve Brown Swirl Handle
Soap: Kell’s Original Handcrafted Shaving Soap – Dragons Blood (Hemp/Aloe Blend
Razor:  ’30-’40s Clix Bakelite
Blade:  Gillette 7 O’Clock Black – Ninja (4)
Splash:  Wal-Mart Witch Hazel 86%
Post: Gillette Lotion ASB & Aqua Velva Musk AS

Another marvelous Monday!  Woke up to a beautiful sunny morning.  A bit breezy but that’s a welcome sign of Spring in my book!  You wont hear me complaining about the wind LOL

Pulled out the Kell’s today.  For a melt & pour style soap, this soap performs performs awesomely.  I’d put it up against many of the croaps currently in the community today.  I should say it performs awesomely period.  Easily generated thick, yogurt-y lather, that feels really protective with nice slickness.  This is the only Kell’s I have tried but I would anticipate thay all perform similarly.  As far as the Dragon Blood scent, it is distinctive & complex.  Definitely some citrus notes (at least to my nose), and other spice/herbal mixes.

Pushed the Ninja blade to a foutrth shave.  Didn’t regret my choice.  Was still very sharp and smooth.  Was able to achieve a totall BBS with no nicks or scrapes.  No buffing required!  I could probably go to a 5th shave but I wont push my luck.  I’m on a roll with great shaves lately and don’t wanna jinx it 🙂

SOTD 3/27 Oh Gosh, I’m Late!

Soap: Sir Hare Artisan Shaving Soap – Drunken Sailor
Razor:  ’30-’40s Clix Bakelite

This has been a weird week for me.  Sometimes it seemed to drag but then Wed-Thur seemed to fly by!  SO now its FRIIIIDAAAYY!  Of course I work Saturday so there’s that but still is TGIF lol

I though I had finally gotten the Sir Hare lather dialed in.  I mean it generates super easily.  It’s got great slickness.  It LOOKS thick and creamy.  But unfortunately looks can be deceiving.  Don’t get me wrong, this is a decent soap.  The thing that keeps it from being a great soap in my opinion, is that the lather dosen’t want to stick around.  I don’t take an extraordinarily long time to shave.  I like to think I’m rather timely and efficient when I shave.  But no matter what I do, when I apply this soap, it wants to fizz away before I’m even 1/3 of the way thru the shave.  It’s frustrating because I really want to love this soap.  The scent is great.  But I just can not get the lather to stay.  I’ve tried more water, less water, spring water, pure water.  It looks great in the bowl, but nothing makes it stay as long as it should.  If anyone out there has had a better experience with this lather PLEASE fill me in on what you are doing.

Second shave on a Ninja blade in the Clix razor.  The Clix is really just like a bakelite Tech.  Shaves almost identically to my Frankentech Tech head.  I love it.  I like to throw sharper blades in it.  Always results in a super close, error free shave.  I haven’t tried a Feather in it yet, but the 7 O’Clock Blacks work fabulously!  Ended up BBS on the dome.  Skipped shaving my face today.  Felt like it needed a rest lol

Any gamers out there?  I recently started playing Diablo 3 and am hooked LOL  I have no idea what took me so long to start playing this game.  I’ve been playing World of Warcraft for over 8 years! 🙂

SOTD 3/25 It’s Not Fat, It’s Zoftig!

03252015

Pre: Sir Hare Bald Head Care Shaving Oil – Beach Bum
Brush: Custom Boar by Steve Neon Barber Handle (The Force)
Soap: WSP Rustic Shaving Soap – Mahogany
Razor:  ’38 – ’43 Gillette Fat Handle Tech
Blade:  Astra SP(2)

Post: Pacific Shaving Moisturizer & Lucky Tiger Bay Rum AS

My mind wasn’t totally on my shave this rainy morning.  I awoke to find my Samsung Galaxy Note 4 UPDATING TO ANDROID 5.01!  FINALLY!  I know the majority of you either don’t care or don’t know what that means but trust me it’s a BIG DEAL to a smartphone geek like me 🙂

So yeah the walk this morning was wet and chilly but it was still a decent walk and Chico didn’t seem to really mind the rain.  I cut it short because I wanted to get home to my see if my phone had completed the update yet LOL  Ok enough about my phone.  On to the shave!

WSP soaps cannot get enough praise from me.  I love these soaps.  They easily generate thick, dense lather with great slickness.  And the scents are top tier quality.  It’s always hard for me to describe the Mahogany scent other than to say to me it feels like a very masculine scent.  Bold but not overpowering.

Pulled out the Fat Handled Tech today.  Hadn’t touched it since Feb so it was due.  Still had an Astra SP in it so that worked out great.  This Tech head is a bit more aggressive than the newer Tech head on my Frankentech.  Thus I wont be putting a Feather in this one.  The Astra feels perfect in here.  I may try a Personna Red also.  Nothing sharper than those though.

It’s HUMP day!  Hump Daaaaaaaaay! 🙂

SOTD 3/23 Motivated Monday

03232015

Pre: Shave Secret
Brush: Custom Boar by Steve Brown Swirl Handle
Soap: Cold River Soap Works – Savon No. 2
Razor:  ’32 -40 Gillette New Long Comb w/ Tech Ball handle
Blade:  Dorco Stainless
Splash:  Humphreys Alcohol Free Cucumber Melon Witch Hazel Facial Toner
Post: Brut Original Fragrance Moisturizing ASB & Pinaud Clubman Classic AS

March is blazing by so fast.  Can’t believe its almost Easter already.  Wasn’t it just Christmas?  At least the weather has been decent for the last couple of weeks.  They say we MAY get a couple of snow flurries but nothing that will stick.  Sour grapes from Winter lol

I noticed that subconsciously, I had been avoiding my more aggressive razors.. It has been a couple months or more since I’d used some of them.  So this week I am making a concentrated effort to put them back into rotation.  Kicked it off today with the New Long Comb.  Not the most aggressive I have but definitely more so than the Techs or the Clix I have been using.  I could definitely tell I was a bit out of practice with it.  No major bloodletting but a couple of minor nicks here and there.  Ended up with a very close & smooth shave.  I didn’t chase the baby 😉

Had a little bit of difficulty getting the Cold River soap to lather today.  I don’t blame the soap.  I “store” it uncovered in a bowl in the open air, so it’s subjected to the environment & humidity.  This morning, even though I soak it a bit during prep, it just did not want to whip up for me.  Ended up generating a thin, but very slick lather with a small amount of cushion. So I may have to look into some covered storage. I store my Conks and another soap the same way, but as of yet haven’t had any issues with them.  Definitely something to explore.  How do you store your soaps that didn’t come in a tin or re-usable package?

SOTD 3/20 Senator Bigelow…Requiem

03202015

Pre: Shave Secret
Brush: Shea Moisture Synthetic Brush
Soap: C.O. Bigelow – Eucalyptus
Razor: ’38-39 Gillette Senator TTO
Blade:  Personna Red(2)
Splash:   Wal-Mart Witch Hazel 86%
Post: Gillette Lotion ASB & Fine Classic AS – Platinum

Thank God it’s Friday!  This week kind of dragged on for me.  I can’t wait to do nothing this weekend!  No plans as of yet, but I have a feeling someone will change that for me LOL

Well, all good things eventually come to an end.  As do good soaps.  Today was the end of my tube of CO Bigelow cream.  It was a very sad occasion, but a very good shave!  Bigelow performs like a top tier soap from beginning to the last drop.  Thick creamy lather.  Great slickness.  Feels protective and has just enough menthol to feel refreshing.  I will definitely be adding it to my order this weekend.  Oh didn’t I mention that?  I’ll be ordering new soaps this weekend so sometime next week look for new reviews and such.  Fun fun!

The Personna Red was nicely sharp in the Senator.  I hadn’t used the Senator in a few months and kind of forgot it’s level of aggressiveness.  A couple of strokes on the dome quickly reminded me.  No bloodletting though.  After gouging myself yesterday (razor head twisted loose and I didn’t notice until I dug a furrow in the back of my head – ow.), I took my sweet time and was very careful.  Ended up nearly BBS with almost no effort and zero irritation.

Is it too early for summer drinks yet?  I usually switch from Long Islands to Long Beaches and similar drinks.  Yes I like frufru drinks in warm weather lol

SOTD 3/18 Just One of Those Shaves

03182015

Pre: Shave Secret
Brush: GBS Pure Badger Brush
Soap: Maggard Razors Shaving Soap (Tallow) – London Barbershop
Razor: ’72 Gillette Tech with Muhle handle (Frankentech)
Blade:  Feather(2)
Splash:   Wal-Mart Witch Hazel 86%
Post: Brut Moisturizing ASB & Aqua Velva Classic Ice Blue AS

Nice brisk walk this morning.  Started a bit later than usual. It’s amazing how much difference 10 minutes makes in the amount of traffic whizzing by.  Beautiful sunrise.  I should start taking my DSLR with me.

Great shave today.  Feather blade on its 2nd shave in the Tech.  Still super sharp but nicely smooth.  I actually think the 2nd shave on a Feather is the best shave.  The first shave knocks just enough of that laser edge down so it’s much more forgiving than right out of the box.  Ended up a silky BBS with zero irritation.

London Barbershop is still fantastic.  Love the thick, rich lather it easily generates.  Nice slickness.  And the scent is definitely evocative of days past when I used to get my dome buzzed at the local barber.  One of my favorites still.

It’s HUMP day!

SOTD 3/16 Donnie D(Arko)

Good Monday Morning!  Ready for another work week?  I am fired up!  Had a great weekend!  As a matter of fact it was so great, I totally forgot to do laundry Sunday so I had to scramble to find acceptable clothing this morning LOL  The Pete Rock/Slum Village concert was awesome!  Great opening acts!  Pete sounded like he smoked a pack of Camels just before but his DJ skills were on point!  Home Expo on Sunday.  I love going to those and getting ideas for projects.

Fantastic shave this morning.  Paired up a fresh Feather blade with my frankentech.  This is fast becoming my favorite combination.  The shave I get with this is so close and smooth, and it comes so effortlessly!  Zero irritation, no errors.  Lately I’ve been skipping shaving on Sundays, just to give my dome and face a rest.  I’m finding that I am really loving shaving on Monday following due to the additional growth and the audible feedback I get while shaving.  The Feather just shears through the stubble like a laser.

Yep, it’s Arko time again.  Love this soap.  One of my favorite scents.  Makes me feel nostalgic.  And the puck seems to last forever.  I’ve had this puck almost a year, and use it at least a few times a month, and it still looks brand new.  That’s bang for your buck!

SOTD 3/13 The Spice of Life

03132015

Pre: Maggard razors PSO – Cherry Sandalwood Vanilla
Brush: Custom Boar by Steve Brown Swirl Handle
Soap: WSP Rustic Shaving Soap – Pumpkin Spice
Razor: ’55 Gillette Super Speed Blue Tip
Blade:  Sputnik
Splash:   Thayers Natural Remedies Lemon Witch Hazel w/ Aloe Vera Astringent
Post: Nivea Sensitive Moisturizer ASB & Master Well Bay Rum AS

Have you ever accidentally snorted lather up into your sinuses while shaving?  Don’t do it.  It BURNS.  A lot.  Made my eyes water.  I had to stop shaving and address the issue before I could continue.  There is still a mild lingering burnning sensation up there.  I presume it will fade eventually.

Predicted a high of 58 degrees Fahrenheit!  Supposed to be an excellent weekend also.  Got a concert Saturday night, and the Home Expo Sunday, so I’ll be running around lol

Great shave this morning.  The WSP soap makes a really thick, dense lather for me.  Has decent slickness.  If I was to switch to straight razor shaving, this is the type of lather I would want consistently.  It just feels really protective. And surprisingly, I haven’t tired of the pumpkin scent yet!  That says a lot about how the scent was formulated.  It’s not cloying or overly sweet.

Popped a Sputnik into the Blue Tip.  Gave me a decently close shave, but I’m thinking that the Sputnik might almost be too mild for the BT.  It was a fresh blade, so I know it was nice and sharp but I still had to go over some areas several times to get it satisfactorily smooth. Not a knock on the blade as I’ve used Sputniks in other razors with good success.  But as we know, not every blade performs the same in every razor.  SO I’ll try it again before I make a final declaration.

TGIF!!  Going to see Pete Rock and Slum Village tomorrow!  Old school hiphop at it’s BEST!.

SOTD 3/11 Lime to the Lemon

03112015

Pre: Sir Hare Bald Head Care Shaving Oil – Beach Bum
Brush: Shea Moisture Synthetic Brush
Soap: Derby Shaving Cream – Lemon
Razor: Maggard Razors MR3
Blade:  Astra SP(3)
Splash:   Thayers Natural Remedies Lemon Witch Hazel w/ Aloe Vera Astringent
Post: Pacific Shaving Moisturizer ASB & Master Well Bay Rum AS

It was a balmy 38 degree Fahrenheit on our walk this morning.  Lots of pedestrian traffic accordingly. Chico was excited as usual to see all the new people. I was less so… LOL

Great shave this morning.  I’d like to take this time to say, if you haven’t added a tube of Derby cream to your shave den, you are doing yourself a disservice.  This is a great soap.  And I don’t just say that because it’s cheap.  Which it is.  Dirt cheap.  I say it because it consistently performs well!  Always easily generates a creamy, thick lather with excellent slickness.  And a little bit goes a long way.  The lemon scent reminds me of old school lemon hard candy.

The Astra SP in the MR3 performed as expected.  Smooth, still nicely sharp.  No irritation or errors.  Although I did find a small nick behind my right earlobe that I didn’t know happened yesterday LOL  So apparently it wasn’t a big deal.  Anyway, ended up totally BBS face and dome.  Even the problem area on my neck is smooth.  Usually when I say I got BBS I’m talking about my dome, but every now and then I can get it on my neck too.

Have a solid day!

3/9 Menthol Monday!

03092015

Pre: Shave Secret

Soap: RazoRock Brain Freeze
Razor: Maggard Razors MR3
Blade:  Astra SP
Splash:   Humphreys Alcohol Free Cucumber Melon Witch Hazel Facial Toner
Post: Nivea Sensitive ASB & Fine Classic After Shaving Splash – Platinum

Monday!  I had a fantastic weekend shooting pics of the massive ice flows at the pier in South Haven, MI.  It was beautiful but also pretty nerve wracking LOL  Some absolutely insane people were venturing way out on the lake ice.  Not me!  The temps were in the low to mid 40s all weekend so I had a smile on my face everyday!  Winter is DEAD!!

It’s another Menthol Monday so I pulled out the Brain Freeze.  After not having froze on our morning walk, I have to say the menthol effect didn’t seem as pronounced today.  The lather was fantastic.  I used a new lather bowl, actually a tiny red plastic salsa bowl that I found at a dollar store.  I grabbed it because the interior has a mildly rough/ribbed textures that seems like would naturally help generate suds.  I think it did indeed help some but I’ll have to use it more to really judge.

Paired up my trusty Astra SP with my MR3 that I hadn’t used in a couple months.  Still love the weight and performance of this chunky razor. With the Astra blade it gives a super close, comfortable shave with no irritation. Ended up BBS with no errors.
