TGIF!  Had a great walk this morning.  I don’t know if I mentioned it before but I live right next to a very busy 5 lane one way street.  Basically I have to cross it to get anywhere.  Sometimes it can be kind of hazardous as a pedestrian!  I’ve been almost hit at least 3 times.  Today was pretty low key though.  That’s how I like it lol

Another new soap today!  Well new to me anyway.  I had picked up another tube of Derby shaving soap.  Mint this time.  Only because they were out of my beloved Lemon!  I know right?  How dare they? So I grabbed the Mint because I’m not really a fan of Lavender.  The Mint scent is a fresh but subtle scent.  I didn’t really “feel” any menthol but I wasn’t really expecting too.  The performance is typical Derby.  Which means the performance is great!  This cheap little cream whips up into a nice, creamy lather with decent cushion and great slickness.  For the price, this soap is a must have for anyones shave den.

This mornings shave was a little uncomfortable this morning.  I think this razor is just a tad too aggressive for me.  Even paired with a milder blade, and using a super light touch, I still ended up with some bloodletting.  So I think I will reserve this razor for if I ever have any heavy growth I need to mow through.  The application of witch hazel definitely confirmed that choice.  Man my dome is STILL tingling!  The burn!!

SO.. any plans for the weekend?  I think we are going to a festival in this little town just south of us.  I like small town festivals 🙂

Whew!  I got kind of lazy there over the holiday!  Went 3 days without shaving which is a first for me in almost 2 years!  It won’t be repeated if I can help it.  Apparently when the hair on my dome starts to grow back, it raises tiny little bumps that I didn’t notice until the blade sheared them off.  Suffice to say it was a slightly bloody shave lol  Cie la vie…

Three new things this morning!  First, the razor.  One of the three that I found over the weekend.  Great condition minus one small crack on the handle.  But from what I’ve read that is a pretty typical flaw with this razor.  It doesn’t look it, but this is a fairly aggressive razor.  I paired it with an Astra SP, which is a decently sharp, smooth blade.  I’m glad I didn’t put a Kai in it.  That would have been even more bloody.  Took me a few strokes to get the feel down, but once I did this razor shaves well.  Mowed through the 3 day growth super easily.  No irritation.  Very little buffing needed.  Mostly because I took it very easy in my problem areas.

Next new item, Maggards new Green Apple soap!  Love the scent!  Cassie & Brad gave out samples of it at the meet up.  As far as I’m concerned it’s another winner!  Lathered great.  Smooth & creamy.  Good slickness and cushion.  Typical top end Maggard soap performance.  I don’t think anything but the scent changed for this soap.  I’ll be picking up a full size of this one.

Lastly, I have a sample of Captain’s Choice – Lime after shave.  It’s a definite solid lime scent.  Bold.  Very present during application, but sitting here about 10 minutes later it’s a lot more subdued.  I am picking up whiffs here and there, which isn’t a bad thing.  I’ll see if I get any comments on it today.

Have a great HUMP DAY!!

SOTD 5/22 Ring The Alarm!

IT’s Friday!  Man this week has just dragged on!  Probably because I am looking forward to this 3 day weekend!  It’s BBQ time!  Yessir!  Gotta go buy some bones for Chico 🙂

I have been on a ROLL this week with fantastic soap scents!  Todays pick follows that trend.  Through The Fire Fine Craft soap, created by Maria Arman (the artist behind Maggard Razors line of awesome soaps).  Today’s choice?  Extinguish! How to describe this scent?  Wow.  It’s one of the most complex, fruity scents I have encountered so far.  Berries, citrus, and a touch of menthol to brighten it up!  It’s a real fruit smell, not cloying or overly sweet or artificial smelling.  Definitely going on my favorite list.

The performance of this soap is nothing short of top end.  Which I expected from it, being a “sibling” of Maggards soaps, my “go-to” soaps!  Even in the little sample tin, the lather came easily and plentiful.  A fairly dense, yogurt-y consistency that when a little water was added whipped into some luscious creamy lather!  Great cushion and very slick.  Razor practically levitated around my dome lol  If you haven’t tried Maria’s soaps… what the heck are you waiting for?  If you like Maggard Razors soaps, you’ll love these also!  Get some! 🙂

Second shave on the 7 O’Clock Yellow blade.  Still nicely sharp, and decently smooth.  I’m going to have to make sure this MR3 razor stays in rotation.  The ease I which I got BBS on the dome, face, and neck is incredible.  Don’t think I’ll use anything sharper than the 7 O’Clock blade though, as the blade gap on this beast is appreciable.  Awesome shave!

I may not post this weekend so I’ll say HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY now.  And THANK YOU to all who have sacrificed for my freedom.

Brrr!  Only in Michigan!  34 degrees Fahrenheit this morning!  That’s like a 40 degree shift in two days!  Smh.  I don’t even have words for that.  You’d think I’d be used to it by now LOL

New soap!  I was privileged to be able to preview one of the pre-release versions of this soap and was impressed with it even then.  Now I finally have my hands on the finished product, and my opinion has not changed.  This is a fantastic soap.  First of all, the scent. If you’ve followed my posts you probably know 2 things about me:  I love strong scents, and I LOVE almond/cherry scents!  This soap knocks both out of the park!  I was hesitant to have this soap follow the amazing aromatic experience of the Bee Witched soap, but my worry was misplaced.  The Wholly Kaw soap held it’s own and is definitely “drool” worthy! 🙂

The lather is dense and creamy.  Very good slickness and excellent cushion.  I felt like I was wrapped in almond/cherry goodness.  Don’t get me wrong, the scent isn’t overpowering, but it is a very “present” scent that I really enjoy.  If you haven’t tried Wholly Kaw yet, you should.  This is definitely one of the premier new artisan soaps and a “must try” in my opinion!

Pulled out a razor I haven’t used in quite awhile.  My Maggrd Razors MR3.  It’s a mildly aggressive razor.  Tossed in a 7 O’Clock Yellow blade.  That combo sheared through two days growth like it was nothing.  Blade was sharp and smooth.  Ended up BBS one the dome & face, and a DFS on the neck.  Took me a second to get the feel for the razor again, so I took it easy on the neck.  Couple of tiny nicks.  No irritation.  Overall great shave!

It’s Hump Day!! Almost Memorial day..what’s on your drink list for the holiday?

What a great weekend!  If you missed the meetup at Maggard Razors this Saturday, you missed a good time!  Check out the details and pics here!  Serene, kind of muggy morning today.  Not much going on.  I think everyone is just kind of taking it easy this morning.  Chico included.

I feel like I didn’t shave this morning so much as I ate breakfast! What am I talking about you ask?  I’m talking about the SO delicious smelling Bee Witched soap by Mickey Lee!  Good Lord this soap smells good!  I finally grabbed some of the famous Mickey Lee soap and man I gotta ask why I waited so long!  This soap is fantastic!  It smelled like I was shaving with  Cocoa Krispies!  Love it!  To my nose the scent is more of a cereal cocoa scent as opposed to a chocolate or mocha cocoa scent.  It might be my imagination but I swear I can even detect a bit of the honey in it.

The super easily generated lather looks like it was made from the left over milk after a bowl of Coco Puffs!  Rich, creamy with lots of glide and nice cushion.  This would probably work well with a straight. I ended up making way more lather than I really needed just to keep smelling it.  Had my entire bathroom in cocoa heaven!  Now I definitely have to go out and buy a box of Cocoa Pebbles! Did you hear my stomach rumble?

3rd shave on the Feather blade.  Noticeably less smooth but still super sharp.  Last shave for it.  4 passes on the dome, 3 on the face and neck.  Ended up BBS pretty much all over.  2 minor nicks.  Great shave!

Anyone got Memorial Day plans yet?

Maggard Razors Meetup!!!

Ok right off the bat, I have to say if you missed it, you missed a piece of shaving history!  This day is sure to go down as the first of many meetups to come!  It was great!  It was awesome getting to meet people I previously only knew through Facebook groups or my blog!  It was also pretty cool being recognized from the blog 🙂  Things like that inspire me to keep it going!

First, the new building.  It is a fantastic historical building right downtown Adrian.  It’s funny that it is right across the street from the old spot, so they didn’t use a moving van, just a “box parade” LOL Here’s a look at the front of the building:

And yes that entire thing is all Maggard Razors.  The new store is easily 5-6 times the size of the old shop.  And does it look good inside!  Check these out!

mr_001 mr_002 mr_003 mr_004Beautiful right?  And what’s even cooler, I was surprised by the fact that they have a fully functional barbershop inside the store!  See below:

mr_barb1 mr_barb2

Talk about coming up fast!  Maggard Razors has turned into a full fledged destination.  And we definitely kept them busy today!  Cassie was moving so fast she was a blur!

And every time i looked up from shopping Brad was holding court with a new group of customers!  Definitely in his element…

The Maggard Razors crew put out the foodbag for us also!  Pulled pork, and an awesome chicken cheese soup that seemed to be very popular (except for with their daughter 😉 ).  The food was served in the upper portion fo the building, which was very spacious and has tons of potential for future events!

mr_food1 mr_food2

Speaking of shopping, you know I didn’t leave empty handed!  But more on my haul in a future post 😉

Finally, I have to say it was great meeting some of you guys in person!  Paul Thebert, Maria Arman it was great finally meeting you guys!  John Beeman its always great to see you! And eveyone else I met, so glad you guys came out and made this a great event.  And thanks to all the vendors who contributed!

Well I’m bushed so I’ll stop here, just wanted to get this post out tonight.  Have a great Sunday tomorrow!!

Great morning today!  Temps are slowly creeping back up to normal Spring weather after taking a frigid dip down to the 30s yesterday morning!  I swear Michigan is deliberately trying to get me sick LOL  I had to dig out my Winter jacket and sweats to walk Chico.  He wasn’t thrilled either.  I actually had to turn my heat back on. Smh..

Good shave today.  Picked the Cold River soap.  I like the scent of this soap.  Plus it’s a normally decent performer.  I think I should have bloomed it a bit more as I had a bit of issue working up a lather this morning.  This is one of my soap that sits out in the open uncovered.  I haven’t had previous issues with it, so I’m chalking this morning up to user error.  I’ll admit to being somewhat distracted.

3rd and final shave on the Ninja blade.  It was noticeably less sharp and not as smooth.  Definitely a “3 and out” blade for me.  Still achieved an overall DFS.  Near BBS on the dome and face, and decently smooth on my neck.  Couple of small nicks.  Again user error.

Anyone going to the get together at Maggard Razors this Saturday?  I am planing on attending.  It would be awesome to meet some of you!  Have a smooth day! 😉

SOTD 5/11 Just Like Candy

Foggy morning!  Nice temps (low 60s) but visibility was definitely compromised.  It was actually eerily peaceful.  Of course it was still very soggy as we got dumped on all day Mother’s Day.  Speaking of that, I hope everyones mothers enjoyed their day, I know my Mom had a good time 🙂

Round 2 with Jeeves of Hudson Street.  This time Butterscotch.  And there were no surprises here, which speaks to the consistent quality the soap is produced with.  Great lather. Easily generated.  Excellent cushion.  Good slickness. This is a solid performing soap.  As per my initial review, my only “fault” with this soap is the scent is too light for me.  I could barely smell anything.  But trust me, that is a very MINOR gripe.  Based on the performance of this soap, it’s a gripe I can definitely live with 🙂

Second shave on the Ninja blade.  Still very sharp.  Mowed through a couple of days growth (i got lazy this weekend) like nobodys business.  If you haven’t tried the Gillette 7 O’Clock Black, you should.  Of the 7 O’Clock family of blades, IMO it’s the sharpest.  Followed by the Yellow, and then the Green.  The Yellows are the smoothest of the lot.  But as always, YMMV.  Ended up a silky BBS dome, face, and neck!  Great start to the week!

Have a great Monday!!

SOTD 5/8 It’s a Tech Thang…

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Lime

65 degrees Fahrenheit is perfect strolling weather as far as I’m concerned.  Sunny, light wind.  I can really smell the blooming trees and flowers in the downtown area in the morning.  Extended the walk a bit today to soak it in, as it’s supposed to be rainy all weekend.  Bummer, I know.  But I work Saturday so cie la vie.

“New” razor and more samples in the mail yesterday!  My Facebook bud Chad I. send me Black Handled Tech.  He wasn’t using it and knew I loved Techs.  Cool guy right?  And bonus – he included a couple samples of Caties Bubbles I hadn’t tried AND a few vintage Gillette Blue Blades!  Yessir!

So the razor cleaned up beautifully!  I love how the gold looks with the black (enameled?) handle.  I popped in a Ninja blade and put it to work.  This Tech shaves very similar to my Fat Handle Tech.  Which makes sense.  I actually think it’s the same razor with just a different handle.  Nothing in my quick Google research leads me to believe otherwise lol  But if one of you razor gurus knows otherwise, feel free to enlighten me!

The Caties soap was fabulous.  Super easily generated, dense, creamy lather.  Great slickness.  And the Celtic Knot scent is really great!  To me it is reminiscent of old school colognes that my grandfather and his cronies wore.  I really like it.  And it blended well with my Clubman after shave.

Ended up BBS dome, face, and even neck!  A couple of minor nicks due to me watching a video instead of focusing on my shave.  I should move the tablet out of the bathroom during shave time. LOL

Have a great weekend!  Stay dry LOL

SOTD 5/6 Rustic Lather

Pre: Sir Hare Bald Head Care Shaving Oil – Beach Bum

Woot!  Woke up to no rain!  We got dumped on all day yesterday so while things were definitely soggy, it was still a nice, peaceful morning walk.  Chico, who hates getting rained on, of course had to walk in every puddle we encountered.  He also found a couple of huge nightcrawlers, which was a new experience for him.  He didn’t eat them lol

I’m pretty sure I’ve established that I really like WSP Rustic shaving soap.  The lather is just so easy to generate and it’s dense with lots of cushion!  Decent slickness.  I thought once I got through the holiday season I’d be sick of the pumpkin scent, but I’m actually not!  It still smells pretty good to me.  So instead of setting it aside for the Fall, I’ll most likely continue to use it through the Spring/Summer.

3rd shave on the Astra SP blade.  In the Fat Handle Tech it felt still pretty sharp, although not quite as smooth as they typically are.  Was able to achieve BBS with no buffing or errors.  A tiny bit of irritation on the back of the head, but nothing to really complain about.  Ended up BBS on the face and neck also!  Great shave!

It’s Hump Day!  Any one recovering from Cinco De Mayo? 😉
