What a great weekend!  Started with a relaxing Saturday doing some casual shopping then spending the evening in good company watching old British sitcoms.  Sunday got up early and headed out to the West Michigan lakeshore on Lake Michigan.  If you have never been to a Lake Michigan beach, you are missing an amazing experience!  I don’t know about on the Wisconsin or Illinois side, but the West Michigan beaches are some of the best fine sand (non-oceanic) beaches in the country!  And man the beautiful people were out in full force!  Ended up spending the entire day there just relaxing, people watching, and listening to music.  Had a nice packed lunch with plenty of liquid refreshment.  A definitely needed respite!

Monday morning!  After that near perfect Sunday I need a fantastic shave to start my week off.  So I pulled out a soap that I know is a guaranteed performer, Wholly Kaw!  Not too mention that it is one of my favorite scents – Almond Medley!  I was NOT disappointed.  The Kaw whipped up into some thick, rich and creamy lather with plenty of cushion and glide!  I got kind of luxurious with it this morn and made a bit more than I needed for the shave and laid it on nice and thick.  Made for a really lux feeling shave.  The entire bathroom smelled great!

The tools of the morning were the Black Beauty, on setting ‘4’; and a 7 O’Clock Black blade.  A combination I have used before and it performed as expected.  Super close, super smooth BBS shave.  No errors or buffing necessary.  Even on the neck, which as you know is one of my problem areas because of the insane directions the hair grows there.  But today it went smooth.  Maybe I should wait a couple days between shaves all the time.. nah LOL

It’s another week, but already the 2nd week of SUMMER!

Man it’s a good thing it’s Friday because I am dragging arse this morning!  Don’t know why but I just can not get it into gear.  My walk was uneventful and pretty pleasant.  Maybe I just need to eat a big breakfast.  I mean a “healthy” breakfast 😉

Diggin’ in the crates this morning!  Pulled out one of the first soaps I ever bought.  Brain Freeze by RazoRock!  I’d almost forgotten I had this soap.  Todays shave quickly reminded me as to why I haven’t traded it away.  This soap is fantastic!  The thick, yogurt-y lather comes almost instantly.  Great cushion and very good slickness.  I have a hard time describing this scent.  It just smells like menthol to me.  Oh did I forget to mention this is a menthol soap?  Yessir!  Just enough of a freeze to wake me up in the morning, which I definitely needed today!  I just realized this is the only Razorock product I own, so I’m going to have to look into that soon.

Last shave on the Sputnik blade and I have to say it performed great from first to last shave!  Today it was still nicely sharp, decently smooth.  Ended up BBS with only one nick on the back of my head which was probably due to user error.  So I will most likely be re-upping on the Sputniks.  If you like the Gillette 7 O’Clock Yellows, you should try out the Sputniks.

TGIF!  I definitely need a drink!  Or three!

Great morning although I was awoken to the sound of cannon balls striking a gong!  Well that’s what it sounded like.  The building across the street chose that time to toss large metal things into an empty dumpster, so the sound echoed throughout the neighborhood.  But considering I’m the only residential person on a commercial block, I’m sure they didn’t get any complaints.  Grrrrr…

It’s ARKO day! I love Arko.  I think I may have mentioned that a time or two.  Pound for pound it is the best performing puck in it’s price range.  Heck, I’d put it up against just about any other puck out there to be honest.  When it comes to soaps, I tend to prefer “croaps” over pucks and even creams.  But this Arko puck is one of the easiest lathering soaps I have.  Even with my hard water.  I just “bloom” it a little during prep and voila!  Insta-lather! Makes thick, nicely dense, fragrant lather with great slickness.  And the scent?  Don’t get me started on the scent.  People have strong opinions about the Arko scent.  Personally I think it smells like the old school Irish Spring bar soap, which I grew up with.  Love it!  The Arko puck will ALWAYS have a spot in my shave den.  You don’t like like my Arko?  Get the PUCK outta here! 😉

Second shave on the Sputnik. Still good and sharp.  Still smooth.  Gave me a great BBS with no errors or blooding.  Only minor buffing in the problem areas around my ears.  I may have to grab some more of these Sputniks along with my Kai blades.  I see a visit to TryaBlade i the near future….

It’s Hump Day!  Do the humpty hump!  Wetshavers!  Do the humpty hump!

SOTD 6/22 Lime to the Lemon, Lemon to the Lime…

Good morning! Beautiful scene for this mornings walk.  Apparently it wont last though according to local weather team.  Storm front should be hitting us about noon-ish, with moderate to severe designations.  So, if you’re in SW Michigan, there’s your warning 🙂

I have long extolled the virtues of the Derby creams!  The amazing price point, the ease of use, the excellent performance, the simple but solid scents.  What else do you want from a soap?  The Lemon is undeniably my favorite from Derby so far.  I also have the Mint, and the Lavender is on my radar.  At less than $3 a tube, there is no reason to not try it.  And no, I do not work for Derby.  If I did, I’d have a LOT more of it in my shave den 🙂

Pulled out a couple of tools that I haven’t used in quite awhile.  The razor – Super Speed Flare Tip. I haven’t used that razor since 2014!  Somehow my whole Super Speed family kind of just fell out of rotation.  I will rectify that this week.  Look for more Super Speeds and other TTOs.  I love the way this razor shaves.  I think what happened is my recent infatuation with my Techs kind of pushed the TTOs to the side a bit.  Shame on me!

Paired it with a blade that I haven’t used in quite awhile also.  The Sputnik.  I don’t have many specifically Russian blades, but I like this one.  It’s sharp, but nicely smooth.  Comparable to the Gillette 7 O’Clock Yellow.  At least on this first shave.  We’ll see how it holds up.

Have a great week!

It’s finally FRIDAAAY!  It’s been a long busy week for me.  Looking forward to just chilling out this weekend.  Not planning on doing a whole lot.  Maybe stop by the Wine Festival.  Just for a drink or two.. 😉

Pulled out the Jeeves of Hudson this morning!  This soap is fast becoming a favorite.  Excellent lather.  Good slickness.  The scent is great… when I can smell it.  Still very faint to me.  Smells good in the mug, seems to disappear once applied to face/dome.  Love the color of the lather also.  It’s kind of an off-white, maybe even beige-ish tone.  Adds nice variety to the morning shave.  Another aspect that I don’t mention hardly ever, is that this soap rinses very easily.  Some soaps it takes a little work to completely clean out the brush, especially since I like to power load mine.  But Jeeves rinses out very easily, which is a bonus in my book.

I actually have no idea what shave this is on the Super Max blade.  I totally lost track of this one. So.. I will pull this blade.  It shaved great.  Decently sharp.  Good smoothness.  Only  a little buffing needed in my problem areas.  Felt like it might have been on its 2nd or 3rd shave.  But it’s hard to judge as most blades shave pretty well in my Merkur.  That is just a great little razor and I’m glad I received it!  Definitely worth he price of admission.

TGIF! [insert some witty welcome to the weekend here.]

Good walk this morning.  Peaceful with minimal interruption from the local rabble. Was about 60 Fahrenheit so it was perfect walking weather.  Love mornings like this.  It could stay like this all year and I wouldn’t complain.

Pulled out the huge paint brush of a brush that I call “Brushzilla”, my Omega 48 Pro.  That brush is HUGE!  I love using it on my dome, but using it on my face feels exactly like what I’d imagine using a paint brush would feel like.  Not a bad experience, but definitely no finesse possible.  Just painting on the lather LOL

Speaking of lather, this morning it was superb.  Which of course is to be expected from a Maggard Razors soap.  The London Barber is one of my favorite scents.  Has that real old school barber shop smell.  Never been to London but I can tell you it smells like the barber shops I grew up with.  As I said, the lather was awesome, thick, and rich.  Great cushion and slickness.  A daily driver for sure.

Last shave on the Astra SP blade.  Still plenty sharp and decently smooth.  Could probably eek out one more shave, but no reason to push it.  Ended up nicely BBS on the dome and face with a good close shave on the neck.  Overall a great mid-week shave!

It’s HUMP day! My hump day drink will be The Kraken Black Spiced Rum on the rocks, paired with a Camacho Triple Maduro cigar.  Smooth…

What a weekend! Worked our booth at Pride all day Saturday.  That event is a good time!  It’s really just a big party LOL  You see a bit of everything!  Sunday was insane weather, high winds and monsoon like rainstorms.  Consequently I stayed inside and stayed dry 🙂

I have to apologize this morning.  I picked the soap this morning and was well into my shave before I realized I had no idea what soap it was.  It’s a sample a friend sent me, and the name which was written on it in Sharpie got smudged.  All I can make out is “Un Jour Geis”.  I also don’t remember who sent it to me.  Again I apologize for the over site, and to the person who sent it to me. Don’t think I don’t appreciate it, I’m just scatter brained at times.

So back to this mystery soap.  I like the lather.  It came really quick and easy with just a little water added. Generated a smooth, creamy lather.  Not super dense but with decent cushion, so it felt pretty protective.  Didn’t quite have as much slickness as I prefer but it was very shave-able.  The scent is difficult for me to pin down.  Kind of cologne-ish but I couldn’t tell you if it resembles anything I’ve used.  I almost think I detected some leathery notes also.  But as I said this was a difficult scent for me to describe.  Overall this soap gave me a great shave and will be used again.  If anybody recognizes this soap from my description, or because you sent it to me, please let me know!  Thanks in advance!

Second shave on the Astra SP.  You should know by now that this is my go to blade.  This is the blade that I judge all other blades by.  So I expect great shaves with this blade, and typically get it.  BBS dome, face, and neck today.  No errors or much buffing needed.  That’s the way uh huh uh huh I like it, uh huh uh huh….

Boy what a week so far!  My daughter has been visiting and has had me running around non stop since my birthday!  But she goes back home today because she has to work Friday (welcome to adulthood baby girl).  We had fun though, and cooked way too much food LOL

I let her pick the scent this morning so I ended up with the cocoa scent of Bee Witched.  She understandably likes this scent.  I think my favorite thing about this soap is the cocoa colored lather it makes!  I still feel like I’m shaving with cereal milk LOL  Excellent performer.  Thick, luscious lather.  Great cushion.  Plenty of glide.  And of course don’t forget the fabulous scent of cocoa and honey!

Last shave in the Feather blade.  Still sharp but noticeably less smooth.  That combined with the fact I was slightly rushed this morning led to some minor nicks in my problem areas.  Nothing more than a spot or two, just enough to tell me to SLOW DOWN.  I should know better.  If I have to rush, I just shouldn’t shave that morning.  But as you know I’m hard headed lol

Have a great Thursday!!

Good morning!  It’s an amazing day!  Why?  Because I made it another year!  Yep I’m an old man today, and boy some days I feel it LOL

For my birthday shave, I pulled out a bunch of my favorites.  Starting with the soap, Almond Medley.  If I had to pick a favorite soap scent I’m pretty sure it would be almond.  I’ve been hooked on that scent since I was young when my mother would buy Jergens lotion!  It’s even better in Wholly Kaw because the performance of that soap is so good!  I absolutely am a fan of that lather.  Dense, creamy, with tons of cushion!  Excellent glide.  I always end up making too much lather because it comes so easily and smells SO good!

Put one of my favorite razors to work, my Frankentech, which is a Travel Tech head on a Muhle handle.  Paired it with a fresh Feather blade.  I don’t think I own a combination that gives me a closer, smoother shave than this!  Rarely any buffing needed.  Almost never and errors or nicks.  Always leaves me BBS on the dome, face, and neck.  I would be totally satisfied if I had to use this combo everyday.

So, I celebrated my birthday this past weekend because, who wants to party on Monday? LOL  Had a great time and an amazing prime rib dinner at a swanky high end spot!  Had an excellent table right next to the impressive fireplace!  Yes, fireplace! They had the temp in the restaurant perfect.

Have a great Monday!

SOTD 6/5 Grapefruit Anyone?

FULL DISCLOSURE:  I no longer shave everyday.  I’ve found that I don’t really need to, and it’s good to give my skin a break every now and then.  Most weeks I end up shaving 3-4 times a week.  I post every time I shave.  I still absolutely love shaving.  Just no longer a daily shaver.

Great shave this morning.  Smelled fruity and delicious!  Paired my Grapefruit PSO with Caties Purple Grapefruit for a great smelling combination.  I love that they smell like the fruit, not like a candy scent.  If you’ve used any of Caties soaps, then you know the performance is top tier.  Great lather, lots of cushion and slickness.  I always end up with plenty of lather left over.  Makes me wish I was hairier LOL

Last shave on the Kai blade.  Still super sharp and decently smooth.  Left me with a BBS on the dome, face, and even the neck!  No errors. Minor buffing in problem areas.  I am developing the opinion that the Kai blade shaves BETTER on it’s 2nd-3rd shaves than on it’s brand new shave.  What do you Kai users think?  Do you agree?

It’s FRIDAY!!  Lot’s going on in town this weekend!  Greekfest, Art in the Park, Art Hop, and more!
