I’m back!  Took a little break from the blog.  Got somethings in order.  Worked on some projects.  But now I’m back on track.  And back to sharing shaves with you!  Oh and I’ve got some ideas that will be coming soon to the blog so stay tuned!

Good shave this morning.  Letting the ‘stache and ‘burns grow back for the Fall, so just shaving the dome and neck.  Pulled out the Redneck soap.  I’ve liked the performance of this soap from the first day I used it, but couldn’t wrap my head around the scent.  Well time changes things doesn’t it?  Because the scent has grown on me and I now even enjoy it.  I still say it smells like wet newspapers or old damp paperbacks, but I associate those smells with positive memories so it works for me.  The performance is top notch.  Great lather, good slickness.  Nice cushion.  I need to explore more scents from Chiseled Face.

The Rapira blade was on it’s 3rd and last shave.  Was still decently sharp but had lost a lot of it’s smoothness.  Was able to chase the baby without any blood loss or irritation.  Not a bad blade at all, but definitely peaks by the 2nd shave.

Beautiful morning today.  Moderate temps, sun shinning, no pan handlers.  I love downtown when it’s like this.  Chico is less distracted and has more time to investigate his route.  It’s a relaxing start to the day.

So so shave today.  I didn’t shave the last couple days out of pure laziness and some indecision.  I think I’ve decided to grow the ‘stache and chops back.  Which means I’ll be going back to only shaving my dome and neck. I’m pretty sure that’s going to be my fall/winter look.  Pretty sure lol

As I said todays shave was so so.  Pulled out the Black Beauty, set it on 4.  Popped in an Astra SP.  SO everything should have been fine but the shave was kind of uncomfortable.  Ended up BBS, but paid for it in a couple of nicks and some minor irritation after the shave.  The witch hazel definitely let me know about it!  Not sure what the issue was, maybe it was me rushing a bit.  Either way I wasn’t entirely pleased.  Tomorrow will be better,.

Also.. I’m thinking I’m starting to get bored with SOTDs.  Thinking of moving the blog in a different but still shave related direction.  I’ll still do SOTDs every now and then, but I want the focus to be on something else.  I’ll let you know what I come up with.

Enjoy your Saturday!

SOTD 8/17 The Return…

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Grapefruit
Brush: Omega 48 Pro Boar
Soap:  Arko
Razor: Schick Injector – L Series
Blade:  Schick Injector(2)
Splash:   Thayers Natural Remedies Lemon Witch Hazel w/ Aloe Vera Astringent
Post: Lucky Tiger Bay Rum AS

Great morning! Had a nice walk with Chico downtown.  The only thing that marred an otherwise perfect moment were the sounds of demolition a block away from me.  I admit I am getting tired of waking to the sounds of chunks of concrete getting slammed into a dump truck.  But such is downtown living in a growing town!

I REALLY wanted to use my PAL razor this morning.  I haven’t used it in months.  Don’t know why but I woke up with it on my mind.  But two things stopped me.  First I went back and looked at my last couple of SOTDs with the PAL.  They weren’t favorable.  Secondly, I couldn’t remember how many shaves the blade has on it. So that combination  made it a NO GO for the PAL.  But then I remembered I had a Schick L Series, so I pulled that out.  The last time I used it (also months ago), I had a great shave with it.  This morning was definitely a repeat!  I don’t know why I don’t use this razor more.  Back when I first started shaving, I succumbed to that myth that single edged razors are crazy aggressive.  But just like double edge razors, some are, and some aren’t.  Fell in serious like with the PAL and the L Series.  Still haven’t formally introduced myself to my GEMs yet. Maybe I will this month..

Yep, it’s an Arko day.  I think I’ve ranted on and on about Arko enough.  I’m pretty sure you know how I feel about Arko.  But just in case you need a reminder.  LOVE IT.  Can’t get enough of the scent.  Great performance, probably the top in it’s price range.  Ended up BBS, no errors.  Arko & Schick is a fantastic combo!

SOTD 8/14 Little Green Apples

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Grapefruit
Brush: Custom Boar by Steve Brown Swirl Handle
Soap: Maggard Razors Artisan Shave Soap – Green Apple
Razor: Clix razor
Blade: Shark SS(3)

Been an interesting week.  Drama kept trying to rear it’s ugly, unshaven head into my life but I refused it entry! LOL  Had a great time last night with an old friend from way back in junior high school!  Haven’t seen her in decades!  When we got together it was like we just saw each other last week.  True friendships do stand the test of time and separation…

I actually woke up this morning to that song about “little green apples” playing on my radio, so I had to pull out that sample of Maggards Green Apple soap!  It was fate!  I love that tart green apple scent of this soap! Do I need to even go into the performance of it?  It’s a Maggard Razors soap.  Enough said!  Ok I’ll say more.  Fantastic performance!  Nicely dense, creamy lather.  Great cushion.  Great slickness.  You can’t go wrong with a Maggard Razors soap.

Last shave on the Shark blade.  I probably should have stopped at 2 shaves.  The blade was noticeably less sharp.  I had to go over several areas several times.  The blade was also considerably less smooth.  Ended up with a pretty smooth shave but definitely not BBS.  I didn’t dare chase the baby with this blade.  But it got the job done.  barely.  I wont be purchasing any more Shark SS blades.  But as always YMMV 🙂

Have a great weekend!

8/10 Butterscotch Blastoff

Humid, sticky morning today.  Also cloudy.  Almost a haze hanging over everything.  Rain and thunderstorms headed my way.  Had a great Friday and Saturday.  Sunday sucked.  Women, am I right?  😉

Digging through my box o’razors I found one that I haven’t used in quite awhile.  The Shark Stainless Steel.  Not a bad blade, but not in my top five.  It’s only mildly sharp, and kind of smooth.  Didn’t end up with any errors or blood, but I had to go over several areas a few times to get the smoothness I’m used to.  If you have tough or dense hair, I would pass on this blade as I pretty sure you’d be disappointed.

Almost forgot I had the soaps from Jeeves!  Glad I got reacquainted with them.  The Butterscotch is my favorite scent from him so far, although it is lighter than I would like it to be.  The lather comes super easily and is fairly dense and creamy. Great slickness and cushion also.  I’d definitely give these soaps a try, especially if you prefer pucks over croaps or creams.  Face feel afterwards is very smooth and comfortable.

SOTD 8/6 Dog Days Derby

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Grapefruit
Brush: Shea Moisture Synthetic Brush
Soap: Derby Shaving Cream – Lemon
Razor: Maggard Razors MR3
Blade: Astra SP(3)
Splash: Thayers Natural Remedies Lemon Witch Hazel w/ Aloe Vera Astringent
Post: Nivea Sensitive Post Shave Lotion & Old Spice ReFresh Body Spray –  Wolfthorn

Is it Thursday already?  For that matter is it August already?  Man where did Summer go?  Seems like it was just June!  Time surely flies when you are having fun eh?  I plan on having more this weekend. Going to the Blueberry festival in South Haven.  Went last year and enjoyed it.  Should be fun 🙂

Great shave this morning.  Felt like something fruity so I pulled out a favorite – Derby Lemon.  You know that old saying “just a dab will do you”?  It definitely applies to this cream.  I used a dollop about the size of a quarter and it just exploded into thick, creamy lather!  Great cushion, very slick.  Pound for pound (or maybe dollar for dollar) this is one of the best performing soaps I’ve used.  The lemon scent is perfect.  Not candy like at all but actually smells like the fruit.  I challenge you to find a better soap in this price range.  Seriously.

Last shave on the Astra SP blade in the MR3.  Still nice and sharp, still smooth as silk.  There’s a reason the Astra SP is my “reference” blade.  I measure all other blades by it.  Consistency and quality sold me on them.  Although I must say the Kai Stainless blade is making a strong run for the crown!  Those are some big shoes to fill.

Anyone upgraded to Windows 10 yet?  What do you think about it?

SOTD 8/3 Shave Du Jour

Pre: n/a
Brush: VDH Boar Kit Brush
Soap: Catie’s Bubbles – Un Jour Geis
Razor: Maggard Razors MR3
Blade: Astra SP(2)
Splash: Humphreys Alcohol Free Cucumber Melon Witch Hazel Facial Toner
Post: Gillette Shave Lotion & Fine Classic After Shaving Splash – Platinum

You ever have one of those days where you just can’t get motivated to do ANYTHING?  That was my weekend.  I had plans for Friday and Saturday and both feel through, so I ended up sitting around the loft with the dog doing practically nothing all weekend.  Well I got laundry done.  Other than that I didn’t leave the spot.  Didn’t even shave.

So this morning I woke up full of energy and ready to go!  We had a huge storm last night that raged most of the night.  I tend to sleep really well during storms.  No idea why.  But anyway, I wanted an invigorating, manly scent today.  Pulled out the CB Un Jour Geis.  Nope I don’t now what the name means.  But I know how it performs!  And the scent is great!  The first time I used this soap I had no idea what it was do to a smudged label on the sample, but I was impressed nevertheless.  My opinion is the same.  This is a great smelling, great performing soap.  Catie’s Bubbles should be on your radar if you haven’t tried it yet.

2nd shave on the Astra SP.  Typically good shave.  Smooth, sharp.  No issues with handling 3 days of growth.  One minor nick in my usual problem area.  I hadn’t used my MR3 in a while.  Now I remember why I used to use it almost exclusively.  I love the weight of this razor.  The head is a standard Maggard Razors 2 piece, but the handle is a pudgy, thick little thing.  Feels great in the hand, easy to control.

“God woke me up this morning. The humidity is gone.  The dog didn’t pee on me.  I’m winning.”
