8/10 Butterscotch Blastoff

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Cherry Vanilla Sandalwood

Soap: Jeeves of Hudson Street LLC – Butterscotch
Razor: Clix razor
Blade: Shark SS

Post: Aubrey Organics City Rhythms ASB & Pinaud Clubman Vanilla AS

Humid, sticky morning today.  Also cloudy.  Almost a haze hanging over everything.  Rain and thunderstorms headed my way.  Had a great Friday and Saturday.  Sunday sucked.  Women, am I right?  😉

Digging through my box o’razors I found one that I haven’t used in quite awhile.  The Shark Stainless Steel.  Not a bad blade, but not in my top five.  It’s only mildly sharp, and kind of smooth.  Didn’t end up with any errors or blood, but I had to go over several areas a few times to get the smoothness I’m used to.  If you have tough or dense hair, I would pass on this blade as I pretty sure you’d be disappointed.

Almost forgot I had the soaps from Jeeves!  Glad I got reacquainted with them.  The Butterscotch is my favorite scent from him so far, although it is lighter than I would like it to be.  The lather comes super easily and is fairly dense and creamy. Great slickness and cushion also.  I’d definitely give these soaps a try, especially if you prefer pucks over croaps or creams.  Face feel afterwards is very smooth and comfortable.

SOTD 1/21 Winner by a Hare

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO- Cherry Sandalwood Vanilla
Brush: Custom Boar by Steve Brown Swirl Handle
Soap:  Sir Hare Artisan Shaving Soap – Drunken Sailor
Razor: ’72 Gillette Tech with Muhle handle (Frankentech)
Blade:  Personna Lab Blue
Splash:   Humphreys Alcohol Free Cucumber Melon Witch Hazel Facial Toner
Post: Gillette Lotion ASB & Fine Classic AS – Platinum

Relatively mild morning today.  Some slight flurries but temps in the low 30s.  Sidewalks are kind of icy so Chico and I took our time walking.  For some reason the canal that flows through downtown was uncharacteristically noisy today.  It was actually kind of eerie lol

Re-visited the Sir Hare soap.   Using my traditional method, I put it to work.  And the performance was very similar to the first time I used it.  By that I mean it has decent slickness and I like the scent.  The lather though is still a bit lacking.  I used my new bowl and slightly less water than before and super loaded the brush.  The lather generated initially looks really good.  But upon closer inspection, you can see it’s REALLY sudsy.  When I applied it to the dome, it almost immediately starts to dissipate.   That being said though, I still got a really close smooth shave with it, with only one “error” and some minor irritation on the back of my head.  So, though it’s not a top performer, I’m going to keep working with it to see if I can find the sweet spot for lathering it.

Used my last Personna Lab Blue today.  My opinion of this blade has not changed.  Sharper than a Personna Red but not quite as smooth.  Not to say it’s at all rough, just not quite as smooth as the Red.  I really like this blade in my Frankentech razor.  I’m super confident with that razor so having a good sharp blade in it allows me to pretty much shave with impunity.  I know I will pay for cockiness LOL

SOTD 1/17 H(arko)! Who Goes There?

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Cherry Sandalwood Vanilla
Brush: Custom Boar by Steve Brown Swirl Handle
Soap:  Arko (puck)
Razor: ’32 -40 Gillette New Long Comb Bar Handle
Blade:  Personna Red (2)
Splash:   Humphreys Alcohol Free Cucumber Melon Witch Hazel Facial Toner
Post: Brut Classic ASB & Master Well Bay Rum AS

Pleasant walk this morning.  Was a balmy 23 degrees and the sun was out.  Chico acted like it was Spring, bouncing all over and trying to  pee on everything LOL  The activity level downtown was correspondingly increased as well.

It’s time, it’s time for some Arko!  I love this puck!  The scent is fantastic IMO.  I love it’s laundry detergent-ish smell and it’s one of the best performing low cost soaps in it’s category!  Even the little red plastic “tin” in comes in is perfect for it.  Easy to lather with great cushion and slickness.  The puck & stick are very different from the Arko creams.  I prefer the puck formulation.  Try it before you judge it.  You’ll either love it or hate it LOL

2nd shave on the Personna Red blade.  Still very sharp and smooth.  I surprised considering this blade had sat in this razor unused for well over a month.  Didn’t seem to affect it’s performance at all.  A simple rinse and it was ready to go.  Ended up with a DFS as I really didn’t “chase the baby” today.  It’s the weekend man!

SOTD 1/15 Barber Day

Pre: Shave Secret PSO
Brush: Shea Moisture Synthetic Brush
Soap:  Maggard Razors Shaving Soap (Tallow) – London Barbershop
Razor: ’55 Gillette Super Speed Blue Tip
Blade:  Astra Super Stainless (5)
Splash:   Wal-Mart Witch Hazel 86%
Post: Nivea Sensitive ASB & Fine Classic After Shaving Splash – American Barber

Still crazy cold.  Only 8 degrees this morning.  I think this was the quickest that Chico has pooped yet LOL  There was a bit of a wind so every time I stopped walking my face froze.  So it was a “double time” pace!

Pulled out the London Barber.  I still love this scent.  I like to wait a while in between uses so that it’s like a new scent every time I use it.  So easy to whip up a thick, luxurious  lather.  All Maggard Razors soaps are excellent lathers but I am of the opinion that their tallow based soap is slightly better.  I haven’t checked their site in a while, I need to see if they have any new tallow soaps because that would be a no-brainer purchase!

Wasn’t paying attention and ended up using the Astra SS on it’s 5th shave.  And it was a great shave!  Definitely not as sharp as brand new, but still plenty sharp,  Got me down to BBS with minimal buffing and zero errors.  That’s impressive!  I’m assuming that my go to blades, the Astra SP, would give similar results.  I’ve never pushed them that far but I’m going to now.  We’ll see how it compares.

It’s Thirsty Thursday again AND Beer Week!  What are you hoisting tonight?

SOTD 1/14 Dragon Shave Z

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Cherry Vanilla Sandalwood
Brush: Custom Boar by Steve Neon Barber Handle (The Force)
Soap:  Kell’s Original Handcrafted Shaving Soap – Dragons Blood (Hemp/Aloe Blend
Razor: ’30-’40s Clix Bakelite
Blade:  Laser Super Platinum (4)
Splash:   Humphreys Alcohol Free Cucumber Melon Witch Hazel Facial Toner
Post: Gillette Lotion ASB & Aqua Velva Musk

-8 DEGREES. Seriously?  It is ridiculously cold outside!  There was absolutely nothing enjoyable about our walk this morning.  It was a “get it over & done with” kind of a situation.  Brrr!

After that frozen walk I needed a good shave to get back in a great mood.  So it was time for the Kell’s!  This soap is one of my favorites for performance, and I love the scent also.  So easy to whip up a great, creamy lather.  Lot’s of cushion and decent slickness.  I’m never disappointed with this product.  I always say this, but I need to pick up at least another scent from Kell’s.

Fourth shave on the Laser Super Platinum!  These blades are fantastic!  I swear this blade feels just as sharp as the first shave!  I went ahead and pulled it after this one, no need to push my luck, but I probably could have done five shaves easy.  Super smooth also, with no tugging and minimal buffing need in the usual areas.  I’m going to be placing a Tryablade order soon and I will be adding these blades to the order.  I can’t remember who sent them to me, but THANKS!!

It’s Hump Day, and it’s Beer Week here!  Recommend me a good hump day brew!  Not too hoppy though lol

SOTD 1/5 Menthol Monday

Pre: Shave Secret
Brush: Shea Moisture Shave Synthetic
Soap:   Headblade Headslick
Razor:  ’88 Gillette Super Adjustable – Black Beauty
Blade:  Astra SP(2)
Splash:   Wal-Mart Witch Hazel 86%
Post: Pacific Shaving Moisturizer & Fine Classic AS – Platinum

Wow!  I picked a heck of a day for a menthol shave!  Temp was at 7 degrees Fahrenheit for our walk this morning.  Consequently it was a very short, very quick and frigid walk.  Chico did his business with record swiftness LOL

First Menthol Monday of 2015!  I pulled out an old favorite.  One of the first soaps I ever used back when I first started shaving my head, Headblade Headslick.  This soap gets passed over by a lot of folks because it is marketed to head shavers.  I’m here to tell you that it is a good soap for shaving period.  Head, face, whatever.  Well maybe not whatever, as it IS a menthol soap, but definitely use it on your face and neck.  It has great cushion and very good slickness.  The lather is easy to whip up into a creamy, thick consistency with just a small amount of water.  And bonus for you menthol overs – it has an appreciable menthol kick to it that slowly builds during the shave.  I guarantee it’s worth it to give this soap a try.

Second shave on the Astra SP.  My go to blade.  Excellent sharpness.  Totally smooth.  Gives me a consistent DFS each and every time regardless of which razor I use, although I do love it in my adjustable.  Typically its very easy to push the shave to BBS if I feel like chasing the baby.

Ok folks, back to the regular grind after the holidaze.

It’s All in the Blade…

I’d been saying that I was going to do this post for months now.  There was always a reason why I didn’t get around to it.  Turned out the delay worked out  as it allowed me to try even more blades 🙂

So without any further ado, these are all (i think) of the blades that I have shaved with so far…

From right to left, top to bottom:

Feather, Shark Super Stainless, Rapira
Treet Platinum, Gillette Silver Blue, Gillette 7 O’Clock Black (Ninja)
Gillette Super Blue Blades, Topaz Stainless, Racer Super Stainless
Super Max Titanium, Voskhod, Personna Platinum (Red)
Gillette Wilkinson Sword, Blue Bird Hi-Stainless, Derby Extra
Gillette 7 O’Clock Yellow, 7 am Platinum, New Lord Platinum
Sharp Stainless, Dorco Stainless, Unknown Chinese Blade
Astra SP, Flying Eagle 74-C
Vidyut Super-Max Platinum, Schick Injector Blade
Sputnik Teflon

Blades not pictured:  Astra SS, Croma Diamante

As you can see I’ve been through quite a few.  As least it seems like a lot to me.  Of those blades, my top 5 so far are (in no particular order) – Astra SP, Personna Reds, Blue Bird, Silver Blues, Voskhod. The honorable mentions would be – Feather (I like them but they bite too much), Wilkinson, 7 O’Clock Yellow & Black blades, Sputnik.  Iv’e still got a few from my latest sampler that I need to try notable the Lab Blues.  I’ll probably toss those in my Tech or one of my Super Speeds.

The Mini-Reviews:

Feather – super sharp, smooth, but not very forgiving.
Shark – medium sharp, decently smooth.
Rapira – average sharp, average smooth
Treet – average sharp, very forgiving
Silver Blue – medium sharp, very smooth *Recommended*
7 O’Clock Black – sharp, decently smooth
Super Blue Blade – dull, rough. BAD.
Topaz – medium sharp, smooth
Racer – average sharp, decently smooth
Super Max – sharp, decently smooth
Voskhod – sharp, smooth *Recommended*
Peronna Red – sharp, super smooth *Highly Recommended*
Wilkinson – medium sharp, smooth
Blue Bird – medium sharp, super smooth *Recommended*
Derby Extra – barely sharp, decently smooth
7 O’Clock Yellow – medium sharp, smooth
7am Platinum – sharp, decently smooth
Lord – barely sharp, decently smooth
Sharp – sharp, rough
Dorco – average sharp, average smooth
Astra SP – sharp, super smooth *Highly Recommended*
Flying Eagle – BAD.  Just bad.
Vidyut – medium sharp, decently smooth
Sputnik – sharp, smooth

Now of course a blade is a very personal opinion to each individual.  Blades that are awesome for me could be horrible for you and vice versa.  The best thing to do is to try them for yourself.  Use my list as a rough guideline if you’d like but don’t take it as canon because as always YMMV!  If there are blades that you think I should try, feel free to let me know!  I believe variety is the spice of life.  Nothing wrong with having plenty of favorites right?

SOTD 10/19 Conk-a-donk

Pre: Sir Hare Bald Head Care Shaving Oil – Beach Bum
Brush: Custom Boar by Steve Brown Swirl Handle
Soap: Col. Conks Famous Glycerin Shave Soap – Bay Rum
Razor:  ’30-’40s Clix Bakelite Razor
Blade:  Astra Super Stainless (2)
Splash:   Thayers Natural Remedies Lemon Witch Hazel w/ Aloe Vera Astringent
Post: Pinaud Clubman Classic

A good Sunday morning shave.  My little Clix razor is fast becoming my favorite “mild” razor.  I say mild because though it is not as mild as my Frankentech, it is less aggressive  than say my ’30s Super Speed.  I really think I’d have to do something quite reckless to cut myself with this razor.  Pairing it up with the Asta SS is nearly a perfect match.  Super smooth and still nicely sharp on its second use.  Very little buffing or touch up needed.

Col. Conks is growing on me.  I had the lather very nearly dialed in today.  The scent seemed to be subdued, but i think it was just over-powered by the Sir Hare Shaving Oil.  That oil scent is excellent.  The Conks lather was cushion-y and slick.  Didn’t feel too drying between passes.  I’m starting to see why this low cost soap has it’s fans.

Pinaud.  The perfect closer.

SOTD 10/12 Dynamic Duo Deux

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Lime
Brush: GBS Pure Badger
Soap: TOBS – Almond
Razor:  Merkur 41C 1904 OC
Blade:  Merkur Stainless Platinum Coated(3) & C.W. Rackliffe Holyoke Mass. Straight 5/8?
Splash:  Wal-Mart Witch Hazel 86%
Post: Pacific Shaving Moisturizer & Aqua Velva Musk

Today was a momentous moment!  Why you ask?  Because I finally worked up the nerve to try using a STRAIGHT RAZOR!  Yeah I know, hard to believe right?

So anyway, todays shave started out like any other shave.  Pulled out the Merkur just because I liked the way it shone when the morning sun hit it.  And I grabbed the TOBS, well, just because.  And proceeded to shave per usual.  Well after I had completed all four passes on the dome, and was contemplating shaving my neck (I don’t always), my gaze happened to fall on my still open razor case… and my newly honed straight.  I was feeling like a total heel because FB bud Bill T. was nice enough to hone it for me for free, and here it was still sitting unused.  So I decided to man up and put it to work!

To say I was nervous is a bit of an understatement.  I lathered up, and trying to recall the dozen or so shaving videos I’d watched, I took my first tentative strokes.  Not too bad.  So I proceeded to slowly complete on WTG pass on my neck.  And you know what?  There was no bloodletting!  I couldn’t believe it!  SO rather than push my luck, I immediately cleaned and stored my straight and finished up with the Merkur.  Smirk if you want, but I believe in baby steps!  🙂

The Merkur performed great as usual.  The Merkur blade was on its third shave and while still pretty smooth was definitely less sharp.  A bit of buffing and touch up was needed.  So If I continue to use these blades, they will be 2 shaves only.  Ended up with a fairly close DFS.

TOBS Almond is the single BEST almond scent I have smelled.  Hands down.  The performance is, well, TOBS.  In other words excellent!  Now I want to try the coconut.  I hear that is one of the best coconut scents out there.  Or was that the HTGAM?  Who else has a good coconut?

Have a blessed day 🙂

SOTD 10/8 On the Smooth Tip…

Oil:  Sir Hare Bald Head Care Shaving Oil – Beach Bum
Razor:  Gillette TTO Black Handle
Blade:  Blue Bird Hi-Stainless (2)
Splash:  Thayers Natural Remedies Lemon Witch Hazel w/ Aloe Vera Astringent
Post:  Master Well Bay Rum AS

Did another oil only shave this morning.  I really like shaving this way as an alternative to lather.  I love lather so I wont be switching over to oil, but I do like shaving with it.  Mainly because of the time it saves me when I’m rushed, but also because of the skin feel during and after the shave.  And I don’t need to apply a balm afterward.  My head just feels so silky smooth and moisturized.  My only caveat is that sometimes I miss small patches as it’s hard to tell where I’ve already shaved LOL

Second shave on the Blue Bird blade.  Still super smooth and nicely sharp.  I definitely have to compare this blade to the Gillette Silver Blues in quality and performance so far.  Very similar shave with them.  I only have one more after this one, so I am already planning on getting a few more to evaluate, from

Short post today.  Busy morning.  Have a great day!
