SOTD 12/7 Celtic Blade

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Grapefruit
Brush: Custom Boar by Steve Brown Swirl Handle
Soap: Catie’s Bubbles – Celtic Knot
Razor: ’30-’40s Clix Bakelite
Blade: Treet Platinum
Splash:   Wal-Mart Witch hazel 86%
Post: Brut After Shave Balm & Aqua Velva Classic Ice Blue

Cold and foggy this morning.  Still there was a lot of foot traffic downtown.  As cold as it is right now, it’s NOTHING like the madness I was dealing with this time last year so I’m not complaining!  Seriously.  Plus Chico gets to show off his outfits.  He loves the attention lol

Had a good shave this morning.  Pulled out that sample of Caties Bubbles Celtic Knot that I’d nearly forgotten I had.  I really like how this soap performs.  Since it’s a sample, I just press a quarter sized amount into the bottom of the mug and whip into it with just a little water.  Get’s me a smooth, creamy lather with great slickness and decent cushion.  The blade just slides through it with ease.  I like the scent also, but it seems to disappear fast, which isn’t a deal breaker for me.  Just means I don’t have to worry about it clashing with my after shave du jour!

Paired the Clix razor with a Treet Platinum blade.  haven’t used one in a while so it was a pleasant surprise that it was as smooth and sharp as it was.  Mowed through 3 days of prickly growth with no issues.  No irritation, even in my problem areas.  I don’t know why this blade fell off of my radar.  Time will tell.

SOTD 11/2 Dragon Fall

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Grapefruit
Brush: Custom Boar by Steve Brown Swirl Handle
Soap: Kell’s Original Handcrafted Shaving Soap – Dragons Blood (Hemp/Aloe Blend)
Razor: ’44(?) Gillette Post WW2 Tech Razor w/ Bakelite Handle
Blade: Gillette Wilkinson Sword
Splash:   Thayers Natural Remedies Lemon Witch Hazel w/ Aloe Vera Astringent

Hello November!  Hate to see you so soon, but at least you showed up in a good mood right?  I started a bit early but I’m growing my facial hair for Movember (or No Shave November), whichever LOL  So now just shaving dome and neck.  Great morning walk today. I love getting up an hour later.  Feels like I got away with sleeping in 🙂

Great shave today.  I was lazy this past weekend so I had to deal with 3 days growth this morning.  Pulled out the Dragons Blood soap by Kells.  LOVE the scent of this soap.  Lathers easily and makes a nice smooth lather.  Not super dense, but has great cushion and slickness.  After shave skin feel is smooth and hydrated.  Definitely a recommendation if you haven’t tried a Kell’s soap.

I popped a sharp Wilkinson Sword blae into the WW2 Tech this morning.  Turns out to be a really good pairing.  The Sword is sharp and smooth, and the Tech is just aggressive enough to make mowing down 3 days growth nice & easy.  Very minor touch up in the usual spots.  No errors.  Ended up baby butt smooth dome and throat.  And that’s how she likes it 😉

SOTD 6/1 3..2..1..Ignite!

Soap: Through The Fire Fine Craft Shaving Soap – Ignite
Razor: ’44(?) Gillette Post WW2 Tech Razor w/ Bakelite Handle
Blade:  Kai Stainless Steel

Post: Nivea Sensitive After Shave Balm & Captains Choice AS – Lime

Good morning!  It’s already June!  Doesn’t even seem like we’ve really had Spring yet and here it is almost Summer.  Time keeps on slippin’ slippin’ slippin’…ah I can feel the “olds” coming on…LOL

Pulled out another smash hit from Maria at Through The Fire Fine Craft Shaving!  This one is called Ignite!  It’s a very Spring/Summer-y scent.  Lot’s of citrus going on.  According to her website – “…Our newest scented soap is a blend of orange, mandarin, mango, peach, lime, jasmine, and orange flowers.”.  The orange and lime seem most prominent to my nose.  Definitely a great “wake you up” kind of scent for a morning shave.  The performance is identical to that of the Extinguish sample I reviewed previously.  Great creamy lather.  Great cushion and slickness.  You still haven’t tried one of these soaps?  Do you need a handwritten invitation?  Consider this post that invite! 🙂

Tossed a Kai blade in my Bakelite Handle Tech.  You know I love my techs.  The shave is so consistent and predictable.  Four passes on the dome, three on the face and neck.  Total BBS.  No errors or bloodletting.  No buffing necessary!  Today was truly a text book near perfect shave.  Topped it off with a splash of the Captain.  I’m really liking that AS.  Definitely going to have to invest in a couple bottles of it.

Have a great start to your week!

SOTD 4/24 You Got’s To Chill (remix)

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Cherry Sandalwood Vanilla
Brush: Shea Moisture Synthetic Brush
Soap:  Headblade Headslick
Razor: ’44(?) Gillette Post WW2 Tech Razor w/ Bakelite Handle
Blade:  Astra SP(3)
Splash:   Humphreys Alcohol Free Cucumber Melon Witch Hazel Facial Toner
Post: Pacific Moisturizer ASB & Fine Classic After Shaving Splash – Platinum

TGIF right?  Woke up to a bright sun and still cooler temps, but good news is it supposed to get back up to the 50s today.  Yay for actual Spring like weather again LOL

Yes.  Even surrounded by all these great artisan handmade shaving soaps, I still pull out the Headslick every now and again.  Why?  Because of nostalgia (it was my first soap when I started shaving my head), but mainly because it’s a fairly cheap, solid & consistent performer.  I know exactly what to expect every time I use Headslick, and I get it.  A slick (lol) and creamy lather with decent cushion, and a nice hit of menthol.  Nothing over powering, just enough to let you know it’s a menthol soap.  Cooling rather than freezing.  It feels just as good on the face and neck as the dome.  When this bottle is finally used up, I will probably buy another.  Just because.

3rd and final shave on the Astra SP in the ’44 tech.  Very smooth, close shave.  Had to do a minor bit of buffing over the ears but that’s to be expected.  I’ve said before that I could probably easily take the Astra to 4 shaves, but it would definitely be more work as the 3rd shave is when I start to notice lessening of sharpness.  But in a pinch, it would work.

Have a great weekend!  No plans here yet…probably going to chill 😉

SOTD 4/20 Ark(o) Of the Covenant

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Cherry Sandalwood Vanilla
Brush: Custom Boar by Steve Neon Barber Handle (The Force)
Soap:  Arko puck

Blade:  Astra SP

Drizzly but still a nice, serene morning walk.  I can’t wait for the “drop in” center to relocate off my block as that will make my walks, especially in the afternoons, much more relaxing as I wont have to concentrate on dodging panhandlers and such.  Sigh..

Starting out the new week with a new razor!  Well new to me anyway.  I lucked into an “accidental” find int he wild this weekend, down in Indiana by the border.  We weren’t really hunting for anything, just down there sightseeing and happened to stop in this lil antique shop off the highway, mainly because it looked pretty rustic. We prefer the grungy, hole int he wall type shops.  That’s where you find the treasures!  And indeed I did.  First display case I looked in had a Tech with a Bakelite handle.  I hadn’t seen that combo before and the price was right so I snatched it up of course.  Later that night, with the help of the Facebook shaving community, it was identified as a post WW2 Gillette Tech.  Awesome right?  Probably around 1944.

So after cleaning it up & sanitizing, I put it to work this morning!  Popped in an Astra SP as that is my baseline blade for testing new razors.  It shaves very smooth, very similar to my Travel Tech.  Very mild.  It actually reminds me of my Clix razor.  I’m tempted to throw a Kai blade in it.  I was thinking it would be slightly more aggressive like my Fat Handled Tech as they are from around the same time period, but it is actually closer to the more modern heads, shave wise.  Ended up BBS with only one tiny error, that was due to my distraction, not the blade.

Arko.  What more needs to be said about this wonderful, cheap soap?  I will always have a puck of Arko in my rotation.  If I had too, I could totally use Arko everyday without complaint.  You need to try Arko (the red puck) if you haven’t.  I’m told the scent is pretty polarizing.  I love it.  I think it smells like old school Irish Spring soap. YMMV.

Have a great week!
