SOTD 12/7 Celtic Blade

12072015

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Grapefruit
Brush: Custom Boar by Steve Brown Swirl Handle
Soap: Catie’s Bubbles – Celtic Knot
Razor: ’30-’40s Clix Bakelite
Blade: Treet Platinum
Splash:   Wal-Mart Witch hazel 86%
Post: Brut After Shave Balm & Aqua Velva Classic Ice Blue

Cold and foggy this morning.  Still there was a lot of foot traffic downtown.  As cold as it is right now, it’s NOTHING like the madness I was dealing with this time last year so I’m not complaining!  Seriously.  Plus Chico gets to show off his outfits.  He loves the attention lol

Had a good shave this morning.  Pulled out that sample of Caties Bubbles Celtic Knot that I’d nearly forgotten I had.  I really like how this soap performs.  Since it’s a sample, I just press a quarter sized amount into the bottom of the mug and whip into it with just a little water.  Get’s me a smooth, creamy lather with great slickness and decent cushion.  The blade just slides through it with ease.  I like the scent also, but it seems to disappear fast, which isn’t a deal breaker for me.  Just means I don’t have to worry about it clashing with my after shave du jour!

Paired the Clix razor with a Treet Platinum blade.  haven’t used one in a while so it was a pleasant surprise that it was as smooth and sharp as it was.  Mowed through 3 days of prickly growth with no issues.  No irritation, even in my problem areas.  I don’t know why this blade fell off of my radar.  Time will tell.

Pretty frosty this morn. Down in the mid 20s.  Still no snow though so I can deal with the cold!  I would not be disappointed if we had a green Christmas!  I really don’t think Chico would be either LOL

Odd shave today.  Started out with a proven favorite from Maggards, London Barbershop.  I’ve talked many times previously about how much I love this soap.  But for some reason today the performance was sub-par.  I know it has to be user error as it’s performed flawlessly for me many, many times.  But I can’t figure out what went south.  I prepared it the same way I always do.  maybe there’s been an unnoticed change in my water.  I just could not get a decent lather.  I got a lather, but it wasn’t the thick, cushion-y lather that I typically get with this soap.  It got the job done, but I was a little disappointed.

Secondly, I previously paired a Lord Platinum blade with my Black Beauty, which is typically a decent match.  Today not so much.  I’m blaming it on the blade.  I have noticed that the Lords can occasionally be inconsistent.  I think that’s the case with this blade.  It just wasn’t smooth at all.  I got BBS, but with mild irritation in many spots. Gonna pull the blade.  Cie la vie!

It’s Hump Day!  My mid-week drink today will be a bottle of Not Your Fathers Rootbeer from SmallTown Brewery!  That beer is good!

SOTD 11/13 HULK SHAVE!!!

11132015

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Grapefruit
Brush: Custom Boar by Steve Brown Swirl Handle
Soap: Dr. Jon’s Handcrafted Shaving Soap – Big Green Monster
Razor: Maggard Razors MR3
Blade: Derby Extra(3)
Splash:   Humphreys Alcohol Free Cucumber Melon Witch Hazel Facial Toner
Post: Brut After Shave Lotion & Fine After Shave – Platinum

It is COLD and windy this morning!  Not as windy as yesterday when we had 60mph wind gusts, but it is still very windy today.  And wet since it rained all night.  Plus they are predicting that moisture could turn into snow flurries.  Nice, right?  NO.

After that frigid walk I was looking forward to a nice warm shave.  Opted for the Big Green Monster by Dr. Jon’s.  I like the scent of this soap.  Another one of those thats a complex scent for me – peppermint, basil, and lime.  It’s a great combination.  Whips up into a nice creamy lather.  Not the most dense but has decent cushion and slickness.  Good skin feel after the shave.  And for those that care about such things – it’s a vegan soap.

Third shave on the Derby blade.  Still decently sharp.  Definitely not as smooth.  But no errors or blooding this morning.  Had to chase the baby a bit in my problem areas but otherwise a smooth and comfortable shave.

TGIF!  Have a great weekend!  I’m going to Chicago.  What are your favorite stops there?

Don’t you hate it when you have a tiny little nick, that just wont heal fully because you keep forgetting about it, and keep hitting it with the razor.  I’ve got one of those in the back of my head and I swear I hit it every time I shave, for the last few days.  Annoying right?

Regardless this morning was a good one.  Had a nice, crisp walk with Chico.  Actually had to pull out the hoodie finally, but it felt good.  I do like Fall, I just hate that it means Winter is right around the corner.

Pulled out a sample I picked up earlier this Spring/Summer, Ignite by TTFFCSS.  I absolutely LOVE the scent of this soap.  But then, I have yet to run into one of Maria’s scents that I haven’t liked, so I may be a tad biased. She’s also the maker behind many of Maggard Razors amazing soaps.  You can’t go wrong with either brand.  Great lather, Cushion-y, good slickness, fantastic scents!  I need to grab a full size jar of this.  You should too.  The scent is a very fruit sweet, citrus-y, bright scent.

Paired up the MR3 with an Astra SP.  Performed exactly as expected for a couple of tried and trusted tools.  BBS dome with no errors… except that one tiny spot I keep hitting.  Ugh.

Start of a new week.  Hope your weekend left you feeling refreshed and ready to survive another work week!  Mine did.  Spent a great day with my mother and grandmother.  I’m blessed to still have them both in my life.

Today is a day for classic scents!  Starting with Maggard Razors London Barbershop.  One of the best “barber scents” that I have come across.  As soon as I open the jar, it immediately makes me remember childhood trips to the local barber.  Our barber was like a family member.  He cut my and my brothers hair from toddlers up until I left for the Army Nat’l Guard at 18!  Except for a couple of “jehri curl” years but the less said about that the better 😉

London Barbershop is a classic Maggard soap.  Excellent lather, great cushion & slickness.  The scent is spot on.  Skin feel afterward is smooth.  Maggard soaps definitely hold a spot in my top five soaps.  Did I mention I love the jars that Maggard uses?  Wholly Kaw uses a similar jar.  Those are my favorite type.  So easy to load the brush from them.

First shave on the Sputnik in the Frankenrazor.  Feels pretty sharp and decently smooth.  I could probably drop this blade in a more aggressive razor and get a great shave from it.  Ended up BBS with minimal touch up in the usual spots.

SOTD 9/14 Killa Bees

It is definitely feeling like Fall these last few days.  Actually had to pull out the long sleeves and socks!  But it’s not going to last, weather guy just predicted several upcoming days of 80+ temps so Summer has gotten an extension.  I’m not complaining.  Although I love Fall, I have never been a fan of Winter.  At all.

I awoke to the radio playing a remix of SWV singing “Anything (You Want Me To)” with a surprising appearance of Wu-Tang members Ol’ Dirty Bastard & Method Man!  How have I never heard this before?  Anyway, so I went into the shave with the Killa Bees (Wu-Tang) in my head and I chose the soap appropriately.  I absolutely love Bee Witched by Mickey Lee.  It creates some of the densest, yogurt-y lather of just about any soap I have ever used.  The lather is simply incredible.  And the scent.  Oh man.  If you like the scent of cocoa, even a little bit, you are going to LOVE this soap.  I swear it makes me want to devour a huge bowl of Cocoa Krispies every time!  One of my top 5 soaps.

Third shave on the Astra SP blade.  Still plenty sharp.  Maybe a tad less smooth.  But then again it was working against a 3 day growth so the smoothness was probably on par.  I’m gonna push this one to four shaves, just as a test.  I like living dangerously… LOL

Not the greatest morning.  Having phone issues trying to post this SOTD.  Imgur keeps locking up my phone forcing me to restart it.  In the grand scheme of things I guess it’s actually a small issue but oh so annoying! LOL

Went for the delicious scent of cocoa puffs this morning!  Mickey Lee’s Bee Witched is absolutely insane in how good it smells!  To my nose it’s exactly like Cocoa Puffs.  Makes me hungry every time I shave with it.  The performance is fantastic also.  Super thick, yogurt-y chocolate lather with excellent cushion and slickness.  The skin feel after the shave is silky.  I probably don’t need to use a moisturizer after but I do out of habit.  I need to get some more Mickey Lee soap.  What should the next scent acquisition be?

Last shave on the fabulous Kai blade.  I love these blades!  Can’t thank my bud Hugo enough for putting me onto them.  These blades have taken Personna Reds place in my blade hierarchy.  Definitely grabbing more of these on my next blade order.  Results of this morning shave?  BBS face, neck, and dome!  Did you expect anything less?

One more day till the weekend!

SOTD 7/18 Fat Boys Are Back

It’s hot.  And sticky.  And so humid.  Not ideal shaving conditions for me.  Even with the AC on, it’s still “damp” in my apartment.  So cold shower this morning after a short, hot, stiffling walk with Chico, who is currently sprawled out under the ceiling fan lol

I wanted a refreshing shave this morning so I pulled out the Ignite by Maria Arman.  This soap has an amazing scent.  I call it my fruit loops soap.  It also has fantastic performance, as all of Maria’s soaps do.  Awesome lather, great cushion, and good slickness.  I have yet to be disappointed by any of her products that I have tried.

Last shave on the Wilkinson blade in the Fat Boy.  A decent middle of the road blade.  Decently smooth, sharp enough.  Nothing spectacular about it but it’s a good solid workhorse kind of blade.  I’d rate it a step or so below the Astra SP, but it is a similar blade.

Time to order some more blades.  Any suggestions?

I had another fantastic weekend! Friday night saw Erylak Badu in concert!  If you like her music, you HAVE GOT TO see her live!  It’s incomparable.  Saturday bopped around town during the day and ended up at another Growlers baseball game.  And we won!  It was a great game, Go Growlers!  Sunday was road trip day, ended up spending the afternoon in Frankenmuth, MI of all places.  It is a beautiful little town!  Very old school German look and feel to it.  Lot’s of cool shops & restaurants.  Worth the drive if you’re ever on that side of the state!

Woke up this morning with Derby on my mind so, Derby Lemon it is!  Excellent lather as usual. Nice cushion, great slickness.  Awesome lemon scent.  You don’t need anything else!  Oh did I mention that it is dirt cheap?  A must buy for our frugal shavers (that would be me)!

3rd shave on the Kai blade. Still super sharp.  Maybe a tad less smooth.  Still ended up with a nice BBS top to bottom and no errors.  I hadn’t shaved since Friday afternoon so I had some nice bristle to mow through.  Of course my version of bristle would be baby fuzz to some of you hairy guys, but hey I’m blessed to have any facial hair at all LOL

Trying out Old Spice body spray.  I’m not usually all that into body sprays but the scent (Wolfthorn) captivated me so I thought I’d give it a shot.  Plus it was on sale lol  First impressions – the scent goes on pretty strong.  It’s supposed to “last all day” so maybe that’s why.  Lot of alcohol in this spray.  Expect “the burn” big time on shaved areas…

Monday, Monday… don’t trust that day!

SOTD 6/22 Lime to the Lemon, Lemon to the Lime…

06222015

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Grapefruit
Brush: Shea Moisture Synthetic Brush
Soap: Derby Shaving Cream – Lemon
Razor: ’64 Gillette Super Speed Flare Tip
Blade: Sputnik

Good morning! Beautiful scene for this mornings walk.  Apparently it wont last though according to local weather team.  Storm front should be hitting us about noon-ish, with moderate to severe designations.  So, if you’re in SW Michigan, there’s your warning 🙂

I have long extolled the virtues of the Derby creams!  The amazing price point, the ease of use, the excellent performance, the simple but solid scents.  What else do you want from a soap?  The Lemon is undeniably my favorite from Derby so far.  I also have the Mint, and the Lavender is on my radar.  At less than $3 a tube, there is no reason to not try it.  And no, I do not work for Derby.  If I did, I’d have a LOT more of it in my shave den 🙂

Pulled out a couple of tools that I haven’t used in quite awhile.  The razor – Super Speed Flare Tip. I haven’t used that razor since 2014!  Somehow my whole Super Speed family kind of just fell out of rotation.  I will rectify that this week.  Look for more Super Speeds and other TTOs.  I love the way this razor shaves.  I think what happened is my recent infatuation with my Techs kind of pushed the TTOs to the side a bit.  Shame on me!

Paired it with a blade that I haven’t used in quite awhile also.  The Sputnik.  I don’t have many specifically Russian blades, but I like this one.  It’s sharp, but nicely smooth.  Comparable to the Gillette 7 O’Clock Yellow.  At least on this first shave.  We’ll see how it holds up.

Have a great week!
