What a last 5 days or so.  Talk about riding a roller coaster.  The good news is my old truck is back on the road finally.  Turns out it was the mass air sensor(?).  So we disassembled & cleaned it.  Truck is running better than it has in months.  Next up, need to replace tie rods and other front end thingys.  Can you tell I’m not a “car guy”?  LOL  Thank God for “shade tree” mechanics!

So-so shave this morning.  I haven’t used this Long Comb razor in forever, and it was pretty clear I have lost the feel of it.  Need to put it back into regular rotation.  Had a hard time maintaining the correct angle for some reason.  I ended up BBS, but paid for it with a few dings here and there.  Nothing major but much more than I usually ever get.  I have been favoring less aggressive razors all summer.  It’s time I bring my Long and Short combs (New & Old style) back out!

Second shave on the Derby blade.  I like using this blade in more aggressive razors as it’s a bit more forgiving than sharper blades like the Personna Red.  Although this morning it didn’t seem to spare me much, but that’s user error not the blades fault lol

12/2 Oops Upside ya Head

Razor: ’88 Gillette Super Adjustable – Black Beauty
Blade: Lord Platinum (2)

Pretty frosty this morn. Down in the mid 20s.  Still no snow though so I can deal with the cold!  I would not be disappointed if we had a green Christmas!  I really don’t think Chico would be either LOL

Odd shave today.  Started out with a proven favorite from Maggards, London Barbershop.  I’ve talked many times previously about how much I love this soap.  But for some reason today the performance was sub-par.  I know it has to be user error as it’s performed flawlessly for me many, many times.  But I can’t figure out what went south.  I prepared it the same way I always do.  maybe there’s been an unnoticed change in my water.  I just could not get a decent lather.  I got a lather, but it wasn’t the thick, cushion-y lather that I typically get with this soap.  It got the job done, but I was a little disappointed.

Secondly, I previously paired a Lord Platinum blade with my Black Beauty, which is typically a decent match.  Today not so much.  I’m blaming it on the blade.  I have noticed that the Lords can occasionally be inconsistent.  I think that’s the case with this blade.  It just wasn’t smooth at all.  I got BBS, but with mild irritation in many spots. Gonna pull the blade.  Cie la vie!

It’s Hump Day!  My mid-week drink today will be a bottle of Not Your Fathers Rootbeer from SmallTown Brewery!  That beer is good!

SOTD 9/21 London Tech

09212015

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Grapefruit
Brush: Custom Boar by Steve Brown Swirl Handle
Soap: Maggard Razors Shaving Soap– London Barbershop
Razor: ’72 Gillette Tech with Muhle handle (Frankentech)
Blade:  Sputnik

Start of a new week.  Hope your weekend left you feeling refreshed and ready to survive another work week!  Mine did.  Spent a great day with my mother and grandmother.  I’m blessed to still have them both in my life.

Today is a day for classic scents!  Starting with Maggard Razors London Barbershop.  One of the best “barber scents” that I have come across.  As soon as I open the jar, it immediately makes me remember childhood trips to the local barber.  Our barber was like a family member.  He cut my and my brothers hair from toddlers up until I left for the Army Nat’l Guard at 18!  Except for a couple of “jehri curl” years but the less said about that the better 😉

London Barbershop is a classic Maggard soap.  Excellent lather, great cushion & slickness.  The scent is spot on.  Skin feel afterward is smooth.  Maggard soaps definitely hold a spot in my top five soaps.  Did I mention I love the jars that Maggard uses?  Wholly Kaw uses a similar jar.  Those are my favorite type.  So easy to load the brush from them.

First shave on the Sputnik in the Frankenrazor.  Feels pretty sharp and decently smooth.  I could probably drop this blade in a more aggressive razor and get a great shave from it.  Ended up BBS with minimal touch up in the usual spots.

SOTD 3/18 Just One of Those Shaves

03182015

Pre: Shave Secret
Brush: GBS Pure Badger Brush
Soap: Maggard Razors Shaving Soap (Tallow) – London Barbershop
Razor: ’72 Gillette Tech with Muhle handle (Frankentech)
Blade:  Feather(2)
Splash:   Wal-Mart Witch Hazel 86%
Post: Brut Moisturizing ASB & Aqua Velva Classic Ice Blue AS

Nice brisk walk this morning.  Started a bit later than usual. It’s amazing how much difference 10 minutes makes in the amount of traffic whizzing by.  Beautiful sunrise.  I should start taking my DSLR with me.

Great shave today.  Feather blade on its 2nd shave in the Tech.  Still super sharp but nicely smooth.  I actually think the 2nd shave on a Feather is the best shave.  The first shave knocks just enough of that laser edge down so it’s much more forgiving than right out of the box.  Ended up a silky BBS with zero irritation.

London Barbershop is still fantastic.  Love the thick, rich lather it easily generates.  Nice slickness.  And the scent is definitely evocative of days past when I used to get my dome buzzed at the local barber.  One of my favorites still.

It’s HUMP day!

SOTD 2/12 Little Off The Top

Razor:  ’30-’40s Clix Bakelite
Blade:  Astra SP(4)

Post: Brut Original Fragrance Moisturizing ASB & Fine Classic After Shaving Splash – American Barber

16 degrees this morning!  A bit frosty I’d say!  Looks like we got a dusting of fresh snow last night.  I have to admit I like being the first to put footprints in snow lol

A virtual visit to the barber!  Pulled out the London Barbershop this morning.  Love the scent of this soap.  And I’m sure by now I don’t have to tell you I love Maggard Soaps performance!  And I stubbornly cling to my theory that the tiny bit of tallow that they say is in this soap, makes it’s lather just a tad denser than their all vegan soaps.  It’s my story and I’m sticking too it 🙂

The Astra SP was on it’s 4th shave.  As expected it performed fantastically.  Still nicely sharp, super smooth.  Gave me a BBS with no blood loss or tugging.  I could probably go to a 5th shave but why press my luck right?  4 shaves is more than getting my money out of the blade in my book!

Another Thirsty Thursday!  On deck for tonight – The Kraken Black Spiced Rum! What’s your liquor of choice?

SOTD 1/15 Barber Day

Razor: ’55 Gillette Super Speed Blue Tip
Blade:  Astra Super Stainless (5)

Still crazy cold.  Only 8 degrees this morning.  I think this was the quickest that Chico has pooped yet LOL  There was a bit of a wind so every time I stopped walking my face froze.  So it was a “double time” pace!

Pulled out the London Barber.  I still love this scent.  I like to wait a while in between uses so that it’s like a new scent every time I use it.  So easy to whip up a thick, luxurious  lather.  All Maggard Razors soaps are excellent lathers but I am of the opinion that their tallow based soap is slightly better.  I haven’t checked their site in a while, I need to see if they have any new tallow soaps because that would be a no-brainer purchase!

Wasn’t paying attention and ended up using the Astra SS on it’s 5th shave.  And it was a great shave!  Definitely not as sharp as brand new, but still plenty sharp,  Got me down to BBS with minimal buffing and zero errors.  That’s impressive!  I’m assuming that my go to blades, the Astra SP, would give similar results.  I’ve never pushed them that far but I’m going to now.  We’ll see how it compares.

It’s Thirsty Thursday again AND Beer Week!  What are you hoisting tonight?

SOTD 12/3 Senate Barber Summit

12032014

Pre: Shave Secret
Brush: Custom Boar by Steve Neon Barber Handle (The Force)
Soap:  Maggard Razors Shaving Soap (Tallow) – London Barbershop
Razor:  ’38-39 Gillette Senator TTO
Blade:  Personna Red
Splash:   Humphreys Alcohol Free Cucumber Melon Witch Hazel Facial Toner
Post: Dove Men+Care ASB & Fine Classic AS – American Barber

Amazing shave this morning!  I didn’t post a SOTD yesterday because it was super rushed and not very enjoyable.  Consequently, the shave was not one of my best.  I was redeemed this morning!

Felt like I had 2 days worth of stubble on my dome so I put the Senator to work.  Paired it with a new Personna Red.  That was definitely the right combo choice for the job today!  They just mowed down that stubble like a hot wire through foam!  And did it smoothly with no blood letting, skipping, or tugging.  That’s the way uh huh uh huh I like it! Uh huh uh huh!  I am liking the Red in this razor much better than the Voskhod I had in it previously.  Ended up super smooth top to bottom.  Actually BBS everywhere except the base of my skull as I decided to take it easy there LOL

LOVE. THIS. SOAP.  I don’t know what else I can really say about Maggard Razors soaps without going all fan-boy.  They are just absolutely outstanding performing soaps.  And the scents!!  I hope they make more tallow based soaps because this London Barbershop has got to be the best lathering of the bunch.  I was just playing around with it this morning and mega loaded the brush just to see how much lather I could generate and it just EXPLODED in the salsa bowl!!  I had sooo much lather, with only about a couple teaspoons (Thanks Rick D.) of water.  It was so luxurious that I was sad that I didn’t have anything else to shave LOL  Topped it off with some Fine American Barber.  An international barber union!

Sunday Shave 11/9 Fat Maggard

11092014

Pre: Maggard razors PSO – Lime
Brush: GBS Pure Badger
Soap: Maggard Razors Shaving Soap (Tallow) – London Barbershop
Razor:  ’61 Gillette Adjustable “Fat Boy” aka Mr. Big Stuff
Blade:  Personna Red
Splash:   Humphreys Alcohol Free Cucumber Melon Witch Hazel Facial Toner
Post: Gillette Gel ASB

I love Maggard Razors soaps.  Although Lime & Bergamot is my favorite scent from them, the London Barbershop is arguably their best lather that I have tried.  It generates so easily and is so think and velvety and rich, almost without even trying.  Is it because of the tallow?  Possibly.  I don’t have enough experience with tallow soaps to really judge at this point. But I know I love it!  Now don’t get me wrong EVERY single soap I have tried from Maggard has been phenomenal lather.  It just seems like the LB is a small step beyond even that.

Put Mr. Big Stuff to work this morning.  Paired it with a brand new Personna Red.  Made for an exceptionally close, comfortable, BBS shave!  As was expected of this combo.  So narrowing down my choices for the 100pk of blades; I think it’s down to Personna Red, Astra SP, and Blue Birds.  And it still may change.  The Gillette Silver Blues are right there also.  It’s a conundrum LOL

Another relaxing Sunday morning, listening to both music and a shaving podcast.  I really appreciate days that I can just take it at a slow leisurely pace and enjoy what I do.  Hopefully you got in some relaxing this weekend!

God bless!

SOTD 10/24 PALs Nevermore…

10242014

Pre: Shave Secret
Brush: Custom Boar by Steve Neon Barber Handle (The Force)
Soap: Maggard Razors Shaving Soap (Tallow) – London Barbershop
Razor:  PAL Adjustable Injector Razor
Blade:  Schick Injector (3)
Splash:   Wal-Mart Witch hazel 86%
Post: Brut Original Fragrance Moisturizing ASB & Fine Platinum Classic AS

Well my streak of amazing shaves ended this morning.  It wasn’t a bad shave per se, but sub par compared to the rest of the week.  I think I have fallen out of love with my PAL razor.  This is my 3rd shave with the Schick blade in it.  The shave continues to just be rough and uncomfortable.  I know it could be the blade and not really the razor but I’m pretty sure the honeymoon is over for that razor.  I actually think it may have a slight alignment issue.  Maybe I’ll send it to someone to have them check it out.  I’m a little bummed that it has fallen out of favor.

Loving this London Barbershop!  The lather just popped this morning!  I used my ceramic bowl which is really too small for my neon brush (The Force) not thinking, until I was loading it.  Turned out not to be an issue.  I generated a ton of lather almost without even trying!  And the skin feel is great.  I think this tallow soap “may” lather slightly better than their vegan soaps (i.e Limes & bergamot).  But that’s like saying in Alaska, Juneau gets colder than Anchorage.  Does it even matter?  LOL

It’s another Friday!  You got plans for the weekend?
