Here comes the rain again.. woke up this morning channeling Annie Lennox.  We got drenched over night, and today are going to get hit by a huge cold front.  Fun right? The high temp for today occurred at MIDNIGHT, so it’s all colder from there.  Not looking forward to it.

So I was rumbling around in the bathroom last night and guess what I found stuck behind the shelves, hidden from view?  My Ogallala shaving stick!  I had totally forgotten about this gem!  Outta sight outta mind right?  Well I’m so glad I re-discovered this soap.  First the fragrance.  I love the scent of this soap.  A perfect blend of lemongrass and bay rum!  Just lemony enough without being overbearingly citrus-y.  And I love their take on the classic bay rum scent.  A tad sweet with a nice blend of spices.  Plus it’s a stick!  I love sticks for the convenience and because they are just plain fun to use.  I just rub it on the dome like a stick of butter.  Dosen’t take much, just a thin layer.  Then I pull out my big ole Omega 48 brush and massage up a smooth, slick lather!  The Omega generates and holds enough soap for 3 complete passes on the dome without reapplying the soap!  No bowl needed.  I really need to explore other stick soaps.  I know my favorite Arko has a stick version…

3rd shave on the Wilkinson.  Definitely has lost a lot of smoothness.  Stuttered a bit here and there on only 2 days growth.  Two days growth on my face/dome is probably like 12 hours growth on some of you guys LOL  Ended up BBS but paid for it with a couple of small weepers and some slight irritation over the ears.  Nothing major.  Just have to remember not to take the Sword blades past 2 shaves.

Have a great weekend!

Great morning! Had a nice walk with Chico downtown.  The only thing that marred an otherwise perfect moment were the sounds of demolition a block away from me.  I admit I am getting tired of waking to the sounds of chunks of concrete getting slammed into a dump truck.  But such is downtown living in a growing town!

I REALLY wanted to use my PAL razor this morning.  I haven’t used it in months.  Don’t know why but I woke up with it on my mind.  But two things stopped me.  First I went back and looked at my last couple of SOTDs with the PAL.  They weren’t favorable.  Secondly, I couldn’t remember how many shaves the blade has on it. So that combination  made it a NO GO for the PAL.  But then I remembered I had a Schick L Series, so I pulled that out.  The last time I used it (also months ago), I had a great shave with it.  This morning was definitely a repeat!  I don’t know why I don’t use this razor more.  Back when I first started shaving, I succumbed to that myth that single edged razors are crazy aggressive.  But just like double edge razors, some are, and some aren’t.  Fell in serious like with the PAL and the L Series.  Still haven’t formally introduced myself to my GEMs yet. Maybe I will this month..

Yep, it’s an Arko day.  I think I’ve ranted on and on about Arko enough.  I’m pretty sure you know how I feel about Arko.  But just in case you need a reminder.  LOVE IT.  Can’t get enough of the scent.  Great performance, probably the top in it’s price range.  Ended up BBS, no errors.  Arko & Schick is a fantastic combo!

Good walk this morning.  Peaceful with minimal interruption from the local rabble. Was about 60 Fahrenheit so it was perfect walking weather.  Love mornings like this.  It could stay like this all year and I wouldn’t complain.

Pulled out the huge paint brush of a brush that I call “Brushzilla”, my Omega 48 Pro.  That brush is HUGE!  I love using it on my dome, but using it on my face feels exactly like what I’d imagine using a paint brush would feel like.  Not a bad experience, but definitely no finesse possible.  Just painting on the lather LOL

Speaking of lather, this morning it was superb.  Which of course is to be expected from a Maggard Razors soap.  The London Barber is one of my favorite scents.  Has that real old school barber shop smell.  Never been to London but I can tell you it smells like the barber shops I grew up with.  As I said, the lather was awesome, thick, and rich.  Great cushion and slickness.  A daily driver for sure.

Last shave on the Astra SP blade.  Still plenty sharp and decently smooth.  Could probably eek out one more shave, but no reason to push it.  Ended up nicely BBS on the dome and face with a good close shave on the neck.  Overall a great mid-week shave!

It’s HUMP day! My hump day drink will be The Kraken Black Spiced Rum on the rocks, paired with a Camacho Triple Maduro cigar.  Smooth…

Great Monday morning!  Sunny, somewhat warm, peaceful morning after a relatively non-eventful weekend.  Supposed to get back up to actual Spring temps by later this week.  Should make for a pretty sweet weekend.  YES, I am already looking toward the weekend LOL

Fantastic shave this morn!  I had to pull out the MdC again.  Man, when you are using a top tier soap, it is easy to tell it.  Dense, creamy lather with great cushion.  I could definitely use this soap with my straight, should I ever use it again 😉  I always hate to rinse away great lather.  Too bad I’m not a hairier guy…

Popped a Kai blade into the Slim, had it set at my usual ‘4’.  That’s a pretty good combination but I honestly feel the Kai blade felt better in the tech AND I swear I got a closer shave.  Could be user error.  Might be because I have so much confidence in my Tech that I shave better.  Possibly.  We’ll see the next two shaves.  Not to say that I didn’t get BBS today.  Small amount of buffing over both ears.  Smooth dome and face.

Side note – picked up some Nivea “Cooling” balm.  So far I don’t really feel any difference from the regular sensitive balm.  I don’t feel any cooling.  But eh.. it’s still Nivea so it’s still a great balm.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!  Hope everyone had a safe & fun celebration!  Those that over indulged I hope your recovery is going well LOL  Winter has decided to come back to Michigan and this mornings walk was frigid to say the least!

Decided to kick off the new year with one of my favorite soaps, Maggards London Barbershop.  Love this soap.  The lather is fantastic.  I hope the Maggards have plans for more tallow based soaps this year!

The Feather blade was on it’s 4th shave.  Just a tad less sharp than shave one.  I am sold on the combo of the Feather and the Travel Tech head.  This is one of the best combinations I have experienced to date.  I need to try the blade out in my fat handled Tech.  But I may just relegate Feathers for exclusive use in my Frankentech.

Hadn’t used Brushzilla in awhile.  Remember why I love that big ole brush.  It’s freaking huge.  Perfect for lathering the dome.  It’s fun for applying to the face also.  Especially with warm lather.  It’s like a big warm blanket rubbing over my face LOL

Topped off with Fine’s American Barber.  It’s the perfect compliment to the London Barber.  Slightly different but similar at the same time.

Enjoy your holiday!!

28 degrees and snowing this morning.  But that couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm I have today!  Why?  Because we are famous!!  LOL  Well not really but I am proud to say that the enigmatic Rick D. gave That Shave Life a great endorsement on his awesome and very well known podcast show “BrushnSoapnBlade“!  You should take a moment and check it out:  Episode 62.  Well worth a listen, entertaining and educational!

Riding that ego high into this morning s shave, I pulled out the Ogallala stick.  First time face shaving with it.  It performed as usual on the dome but I admittedly had some difficulty lathering it to my satisfaction.  Part of that issue lies with my choice of brush.  While the big Omega works perfectly on lathering my big head, it’s size and floppiness works against me on the face.  It was hard to get the brush to “splay” correctly and I was forced to basically just “paint” on the lather.  Workable, but not my preference.  Going forward, I will have to try a smaller brush.  Other than that I still love this soap.  Lemongrass is a perfect morning scent.  I have lemongrass candles that I burn on the weekend and it has my whole loft smelling like goodness!

Second shave on the PolSilver.  Still very sharp and decently smooth.  Had to do some clean up over the ears but nothing too bad.  Thought I’d finished with zero errors but while rinsing found a tiny weeper upstairs.  Still ended with a super BBS shave top to bottom!

Have a great Thursday and Check out Rick D. over at BrushnSoapnBlade!

Whew late night post.  Been a hectic day but in a good way.  Worked then spent the evening watching hot air balloons and listening to some guy beat box classic rock songs and a Michael Jackson oldies revue. Yep.  Actually wasn’t horrible.  A pretty decent ending to a day that started with a great shave.

Used my Slim  (on setting 5) paired with a Silver Blue blade on it’s 3rd shave.  The blade was still very sharp and smooth.  Gave a very close shave with no errors.  This shave confirmed the move of the Silver Blue blades into my top 5 blades.

I love using my Ogalalla shave stick.  After the pre-shave oil, i re-wet my head then rub that “butter” all over the dome.  Then with a fairly damp brush I head lather.  Love how the scent just kind of wraps around my face with that gorgeous smell.  The soap provides lots of cushion and is decently slick.  If you havent tried it, I suggest you do, especially if you like the bay rum scent.  The addition of the lemon grass makes for a delicious combination.

Ended with a super close BBS.  Hope your Saturday went well!

Post: Aubrey Organics City Rhythms AS Balm & Master Well Bay Rum AS

On an open comb jag.  Since I used the Senator yesterday, decided on the 41C this morning.  While digging in my blade box, I found the blade that came with the razor.  I didn’t use it initially as I had read some not great reviews on it, and I rarely see anyone mentioning them online.  But what is life if not an adventure right?

So I popped the Merkur blade in and got to work.  I have to say I find the combination of the Merkur blade in the Merkur razor worked great for me.  It was a super smooth shave.  Felt nearly as mild as when using my Tech!  The Merkur blade felt decently sharp although I did have to do some “buffing” in my problem areas.  Mostly over my ears.  I have found that I tend to prefer heavier razors/handles, but for a pretty lightweight razor the 41OC does a good job.  My only real caveat with the razor is the handle, and its a subjective gripe.  I just prefer knurled type style handles.  Feel like I have more confidence in the grip.  Not that the 41OC is slippery, but it is pretty smooth.

The Ogalalla definitely helped to achieve a DFS.  I head lather with the stick which is always enjoyable for me.  This is another of my favorite scents.  It is very refreshing and light.  Ending with the Master Well Bay Rum is the perfect compliment.

TGIF!  Get up get out and get something!

SOTD 8/10 Morning with the Senator!

Pre: HeadBlade HeadShed & Maggard Razors PSO – Lime
Brush: Omega 48 Pro (Brushzilla)
Soap: Maggard Razors – Fougere Sauvage
Razor: ’38-39 Gillette Senator TTO
Blade:  Treet Platinum
Splash:  Wal-Mart Witch Hazel 86%
Post: Brut Original Fragrance Moisturizing ASB & Pinaud Clubman Classic After Shave Lotion

A great way to start my Sunday morning!  Today I’m going to be focused on a few shaving related projects I’ve wanted to get started on so I wanted to start the day with a fantastic shave.  Plus a friend just informed me he has a razor that he’s sure I’ll be interested in!  Bonus!

You know I immediately had to try out my big find from yesterday, the Senator TTO!  From what people more knowledgeable about vintage razors than I tell me, it’s a fairly rare razor and highly regarded as a great shaver.  I wasn’t disappointed.  I of course couldn’t help but compare it to my ’32 -40 Gillette New Long Comb Bar Handle.  I assumed that it would shave similarly as the blade exposure & gap looked about the same on them both.  Paid for that assumption almost immediately with a few minor weepers .  Nothing bad, just enough to tell me to slow down and get to know this razor!  So that I did.  The Senator is a phenomenal shaver, but in my opinion does NOT shave like a New.  Although the blade dynamics look the same, the Senator shaved more aggressive and closer than my New or my ’32 -40 Gillette Short Comb.

I picked a Treet Platinum blade for the inaugural shave as I’d really liked the smoothness of this blade before.  In the Senator it felt a tad less smooth but super sharp.  But that may just have been me getting used to the razor.  Ended up with a total BBS with zero touch up.  I can tell this is a combo that will be repeated with pleasure.

Revisited the Fougere Sauvage sample.  I do like this scent.  It has a subtle underlying sweetness, with out being cloying that appeals to me.  Mr “I like strong scents”. LOL  It lathered exceptionally well with Brushzilla.  I usually reserve the big Omega for face/head lathering but just felt like breaking it out this morning.  I forget how much lather this beast holds when bowl lathering with it.  I had enough lather in the brush to do 3 passes on the dome AND 3 passes on the neck, and still had a decent amount left in the brush.  I hated to rinse it away.

Ok I’m off “ingredient” shopping. Enjoy your Sunday!!

Pulled out the Ogalalla this morning.  Love this soap but it still makes me laugh applying this stuff to the dome.  Feel like I’m buttering myself LOL  The performance is great!  Head lathered using Brushzilla.  I think the Ogalalla is a little bit thirsty but made a nice rich lather with a minimum of effort.  Did feel a bit dry between passes but I pretty sure adding more water would correct that.  The scent is one of my favorite bay rums. Need to grab the matching after shave.

Love my Slim.  After a bit of an over zealous start to the shave on setting 6, and a nice weeper, I dialed it back to 5 and finished up BBS.  It’s amazing how big a difference that one click will make in the way the Slim shaves.  I was admittedly skeptical at first but not now!  This was the last shave on the Silver Blue blade.  Still plenty sharp but, but not quite as smooth as previously.  Was probably one of the reasons I had to dial the Slim back a notch.  So 3 shaves will undoubtedly be the limit for these for me.

Finished up with the Pinaud Classic.  I really love how that scent evokes childhood memories for me.  I can see myself sitting in the barber chair at Mr. Sams shop, listening to the old men tell their jokes and tall tales, and discuss local happenings.  Those were some really good times and are missed.  I think our communities could benefit from bringing that kind of connection back.  Don’t you?  TGIF!!
