Yep.  Winter has arrived, just in time for Thanksgiving.  it was about 21 degrees Fahrenheit this morning, and we have a good 3 inches on the ground.  Was still a pretty nice walk this morning.  Chico was irritated because he hates walking on salt.  But he wont let me pick him up, and he refuses to wear paw covers, and we live downtown.  There is salt everywhere.  He just has to deal with it. I just keep an eye on his paws for any problems.

Really smooth shave this morning!  Pulled out the RazoRock.  This soap was one of my first artisan soaps.  back when I first grabbed it, RazoRock was all over the shave groups and forums.  Now I never see the brand mentioned anymore.  What’s up with that?  Did he “fall off”?  If I missed something, please fill me in!  Aside from that, I still love this soap.  It was also my first real menthol soap.  It doesn’t feel nearly as icy as it did back then, but I attest that to me becoming more tolerant of it.  Still has a nice chill though.  Makes a nice smooth lather, and has decent glide.  Skin feels moisturized afterwards.  Good soap.

Matched up an Astra SP blade with my Black Beauty.  This is always a great combo.  Performed as expected.  Was able to achieve BBS with minimal effort.  Some tiny spot of irritation on the back of my head but I blame that on user error.

So what are your T-Bird Day plans?

SOTD 9/25 I Got the Blues…

Pre: Shave Secret
Brush: GBS Pure Badger
Soap: TOBS – Jermyn Street
Razor:  ’32 -40 Gillette New Long Comb w/ Tech Ball handle
Blade:  Gillette Super Blue (Chinese) / Astra SP
Splash:  Humphreys Alcohol Free Cucumber Melon Witch Hazel Facial Toner
Post: Brut Original Fragrance Moisturizing ASB & Aqua Velva Musk

I am kind of bummed.  I hate to admit it, but this morning, for the first time since I started shaving ever; I was disappointed with a Gillette blade!  I know, I can’t believe it either but it’s true.  Saying I was disappointed is being very generous really.  This blade was absolutely HORRIBLE.  Right from the start it was super rough with lots of tugging & skipping.  I had to make sure the blade was actually positioned and tightened correctly it was so bad!  I tried to make a go of it anyway, but half way through the first pass (WTG) it was so rough that I had to pull the blade.  That is something that I have NEVER had to do before.  I’ve tossed blades after one use, but never had to stop mid-shave and switch blades.  I did this morning.  Popped in my go to blade, an Astra SP.  Everything was lovely from there on!  Sharp, smooth, and satisfied!

Pulled out the Jermyn Street today.  There are a lot of fans of this soap/scent so I thought I’d give it another go.  I’m pretty ambivalent about the scent.  It’s pleasant enough, just doesn’t really excite me LOL  The performance is TOBS standard luscious lather with plenty of cushion and decent glide.  This soap likes water.

Ended with a silky BBS even after the false start with the Chinese blade.  I will not be using this one again.  Well to be fair & objective I guess I should try one more but I doubt that todays blade was a fluke.  Ugh.

It’s thirsty Thursday!  Where’s my ale?

Post: Brut Original Fragrance Moisturizing ASB, no after shave

Well maybe I was spoiled after the great shave I had yesterday but today’s shave just seemed unnecessarily rough. I didn’t really enjoy it at all and opted to skip the neck portion, just to be done with it.

Used the PAL with the Schick blade on its 3rd shave. Now maybe it’s just that the Schick blades are only good for a couple shaves on my dome, which would make them kind of expensive to use daily. The last couple of shaves with this combination were pretty decent shaves. This morning was not. The blade felt rough and was catching and skipping a lot. At first I though the lather was too dry, which I have experienced before with this soap, but it turned out to be the blade. If this is going to be the case, I’m pretty disappointed with these blades as I anticipated getting MUCH more use out of them. After a bit of work, I did end up with a BBS, but I’m paying for it as I can feel some irritation on the back of my head and over my ears.

This was the last of my Trumpers Almond sample. I really love the scent of this soap. It is such a rich marzipan-like almond, as opposed to TOBS Almond which is more of a cherry almond. Initially I thought I didn’t have enough for a shave. I was planning on adding it to some TOBS Almond, but I was wrong. The GFT lathered awesomely! Nice and thick. GFT is a bit thirsty so I made sure to add lots of water. Has decent glide, about average for higher end soaps. Excellent skin feel between passes.

So I put new blades in both the PAL and Schick and will give another go next week. Hopefully I’m wrong about these blades. Have a great Sunday!

After:  Aqua Velva Musk

Good shave today!  The Topaz blade seemed noticeably less sharp but still performed well.  Love the lather of the TOBS Coconut.  The scent it nice also.  Speaking of lather, did you notice I used a different bowl?  Probably not LOL  yesterday I stopped by Wally World and picked up some store brand witch hazel, some Aqua Velva Musk (didn’t know they had it, BONUS!), and a black plastic salsa bowl (only $1.50) that I had seen mentioned on The Shave Den as an ideal bowl.  Well turns out they were right!  It’s damn near a perfect bowl for me.  It fits my hand like a glove.  It wide enough for my big Omega, and it’s just textured enough inside to increase lather production!  The only thing I may do to it, is I “might” take a dremel to the inside and rough it up a tad more, just to further stimulate lather.  But as is it definitely increased the volume and quality of the lather I’d been creating.

The Wal-Mart witch hazel seems decent.  My first time using just naked witch hazel.  Not in love with its natural scent.  It also seemed to sting a lot less than the witch hazel/tea tree oil mix by Shea Moisture.

You know what I absolutely hate?  When I am done shaving and I do my final inspection, everything feels totally smooth.  Then 10 – 15 minutes later I just happen to reach up and rub my head and IMMEDIATELY hit a rough patch!  I HATE THAT!!!  Drives me bonkers!  Ok I’m done, where’s my chai tea?

New Blade for the TTO.  So far I like the Topaz.  Had a very smooth, very close shave with no weepers.  There seemed to be a little more “chatter” during the shave but I need to do more research on what that indicates.  The Coates was excellent as usual.  It really lathers well and I love the scent.  Leaves the skin feeling smooth.  Topped it off with the old standby Ice Blue.  I kind of want to try some of the other Aqua Velva scents I see online.  Specifically the musk.  I need to expand my after shave selection in general.

Last shave on the Sword.  Still felt very sharp and actually a bit smoother than the first two shaves with it.  I’m tempted to try a 4th shave but eh..  The combo of the Proraso and the badger brush was very productive.  Lots of rich lather.  I don’t really get much scent wise from the Green & White but thats a minor thing.  On the third round of working through my soap samples.  Will be making final choices after this one.
