Cold and foggy this morning.  Still there was a lot of foot traffic downtown.  As cold as it is right now, it’s NOTHING like the madness I was dealing with this time last year so I’m not complaining!  Seriously.  Plus Chico gets to show off his outfits.  He loves the attention lol

Had a good shave this morning.  Pulled out that sample of Caties Bubbles Celtic Knot that I’d nearly forgotten I had.  I really like how this soap performs.  Since it’s a sample, I just press a quarter sized amount into the bottom of the mug and whip into it with just a little water.  Get’s me a smooth, creamy lather with great slickness and decent cushion.  The blade just slides through it with ease.  I like the scent also, but it seems to disappear fast, which isn’t a deal breaker for me.  Just means I don’t have to worry about it clashing with my after shave du jour!

Paired the Clix razor with a Treet Platinum blade.  haven’t used one in a while so it was a pleasant surprise that it was as smooth and sharp as it was.  Mowed through 3 days of prickly growth with no issues.  No irritation, even in my problem areas.  I don’t know why this blade fell off of my radar.  Time will tell.

Pretty frosty this morn. Down in the mid 20s.  Still no snow though so I can deal with the cold!  I would not be disappointed if we had a green Christmas!  I really don’t think Chico would be either LOL

Odd shave today.  Started out with a proven favorite from Maggards, London Barbershop.  I’ve talked many times previously about how much I love this soap.  But for some reason today the performance was sub-par.  I know it has to be user error as it’s performed flawlessly for me many, many times.  But I can’t figure out what went south.  I prepared it the same way I always do.  maybe there’s been an unnoticed change in my water.  I just could not get a decent lather.  I got a lather, but it wasn’t the thick, cushion-y lather that I typically get with this soap.  It got the job done, but I was a little disappointed.

Secondly, I previously paired a Lord Platinum blade with my Black Beauty, which is typically a decent match.  Today not so much.  I’m blaming it on the blade.  I have noticed that the Lords can occasionally be inconsistent.  I think that’s the case with this blade.  It just wasn’t smooth at all.  I got BBS, but with mild irritation in many spots. Gonna pull the blade.  Cie la vie!

It’s Hump Day!  My mid-week drink today will be a bottle of Not Your Fathers Rootbeer from SmallTown Brewery!  That beer is good!

Man, it was COLD this weekend!  That doesn’t bode well for how intense this Winter is going to be.  I’m really not looking forward to it, but I live in Michigan, so what can I do right? LOL  Not as cold this morning.  Had a nice walk with Chico over by the train depot along the tracks.  Peaceful.

I didn’t post any shaves last week, so I’m getting back into the swing of things today.  This mornings shave was pretty darn good.  Pulled out Mickey Lee’s Bee Witched.  LOVE everything about this soap.  The scent, the lather, the skin feel, the cushion & glide.  Definitely need to pick up another scent from them.

Paired the Fat Boy with a Treet Platinum.  Haven’t used that blade since 2014 if I recall correctly.  Sharp blade.  Not as smooth as the Astra, but not harsh either.  had the Fat Boy set on ‘4’ initially, then dialed down to ‘3’ for the last two passes.  Had a couple days growth to deal with but the Treet handled it well.  I did get a small vertical nick on my neck just behind my right ear but it was user error.  I was streaming old school jams and “Freddy Jackson – Rock Me Tonight” came on and suddenly it was karaoke at the Apollo LOL  But I digress 😉

Start of a new week.  Hope your weekend left you feeling refreshed and ready to survive another work week!  Mine did.  Spent a great day with my mother and grandmother.  I’m blessed to still have them both in my life.

Today is a day for classic scents!  Starting with Maggard Razors London Barbershop.  One of the best “barber scents” that I have come across.  As soon as I open the jar, it immediately makes me remember childhood trips to the local barber.  Our barber was like a family member.  He cut my and my brothers hair from toddlers up until I left for the Army Nat’l Guard at 18!  Except for a couple of “jehri curl” years but the less said about that the better 😉

London Barbershop is a classic Maggard soap.  Excellent lather, great cushion & slickness.  The scent is spot on.  Skin feel afterward is smooth.  Maggard soaps definitely hold a spot in my top five soaps.  Did I mention I love the jars that Maggard uses?  Wholly Kaw uses a similar jar.  Those are my favorite type.  So easy to load the brush from them.

First shave on the Sputnik in the Frankenrazor.  Feels pretty sharp and decently smooth.  I could probably drop this blade in a more aggressive razor and get a great shave from it.  Ended up BBS with minimal touch up in the usual spots.

Very mild morning today.  Summer is definitely trying to hold one.  Had a nice walk with Chico.  He is such an attention junkie.  Any eye contact and he insists that you acknowledge him.  Immediately.  Several times.  Smh…lol

Fantastic shave this morning!  I realized I hadn’t used my Wholly Kaw soap since July, so I pulled it out.  Man I’m glad I did.  When I don’t use a soap for awhile, it’s easy to forget just how good of a soap it is.  Wholly Kaw is a top tier artisan soap.  I’d say it holds it’s own with any of the “big boys” out there, and is substantially better than a few of them.  Thick, rich lather that is super easy to generate.  Great slickness and cushion.  Skin feels very protected.  And I absolutely love his Almond Medley scent!  It’s one of my favorite Almond scents.  If you haven’t yet, I’d really recommend trying a Wholly Kaw soap.

Fourth shave on the Astra SP blade!  Fourth!  Still nicely sharp, still smooth.  No errors or bloodletting.  Chased the baby and caught him fairly easily. Minor touch up in problem areas.  I am very sure that I could get a 5th shave out of this blade.  But no.  It gets retired.  But I am moving my Astra Sp to 4 shaves on the regular now.  I need to get some more Kai blades!

I’m back!  Took a little break from the blog.  Got somethings in order.  Worked on some projects.  But now I’m back on track.  And back to sharing shaves with you!  Oh and I’ve got some ideas that will be coming soon to the blog so stay tuned!

Good shave this morning.  Letting the ‘stache and ‘burns grow back for the Fall, so just shaving the dome and neck.  Pulled out the Redneck soap.  I’ve liked the performance of this soap from the first day I used it, but couldn’t wrap my head around the scent.  Well time changes things doesn’t it?  Because the scent has grown on me and I now even enjoy it.  I still say it smells like wet newspapers or old damp paperbacks, but I associate those smells with positive memories so it works for me.  The performance is top notch.  Great lather, good slickness.  Nice cushion.  I need to explore more scents from Chiseled Face.

The Rapira blade was on it’s 3rd and last shave.  Was still decently sharp but had lost a lot of it’s smoothness.  Was able to chase the baby without any blood loss or irritation.  Not a bad blade at all, but definitely peaks by the 2nd shave.

Beautiful morning today.  Moderate temps, sun shinning, no pan handlers.  I love downtown when it’s like this.  Chico is less distracted and has more time to investigate his route.  It’s a relaxing start to the day.

So so shave today.  I didn’t shave the last couple days out of pure laziness and some indecision.  I think I’ve decided to grow the ‘stache and chops back.  Which means I’ll be going back to only shaving my dome and neck. I’m pretty sure that’s going to be my fall/winter look.  Pretty sure lol

As I said todays shave was so so.  Pulled out the Black Beauty, set it on 4.  Popped in an Astra SP.  SO everything should have been fine but the shave was kind of uncomfortable.  Ended up BBS, but paid for it in a couple of nicks and some minor irritation after the shave.  The witch hazel definitely let me know about it!  Not sure what the issue was, maybe it was me rushing a bit.  Either way I wasn’t entirely pleased.  Tomorrow will be better,.

Also.. I’m thinking I’m starting to get bored with SOTDs.  Thinking of moving the blog in a different but still shave related direction.  I’ll still do SOTDs every now and then, but I want the focus to be on something else.  I’ll let you know what I come up with.

Enjoy your Saturday!

SOTD 6/15 Hmmm…

Pre: Sir Hare Bald Head Care Shaving Oil – Beach Bum

Blade:  Astra SP (2)
Splash:   Wal-mart 86% Witch hazel
Post: Nivea Sensitive After Shave Balm & English Leather Black cologne

What a weekend! Worked our booth at Pride all day Saturday.  That event is a good time!  It’s really just a big party LOL  You see a bit of everything!  Sunday was insane weather, high winds and monsoon like rainstorms.  Consequently I stayed inside and stayed dry 🙂

I have to apologize this morning.  I picked the soap this morning and was well into my shave before I realized I had no idea what soap it was.  It’s a sample a friend sent me, and the name which was written on it in Sharpie got smudged.  All I can make out is “Un Jour Geis”.  I also don’t remember who sent it to me.  Again I apologize for the over site, and to the person who sent it to me. Don’t think I don’t appreciate it, I’m just scatter brained at times.

So back to this mystery soap.  I like the lather.  It came really quick and easy with just a little water added. Generated a smooth, creamy lather.  Not super dense but with decent cushion, so it felt pretty protective.  Didn’t quite have as much slickness as I prefer but it was very shave-able.  The scent is difficult for me to pin down.  Kind of cologne-ish but I couldn’t tell you if it resembles anything I’ve used.  I almost think I detected some leathery notes also.  But as I said this was a difficult scent for me to describe.  Overall this soap gave me a great shave and will be used again.  If anybody recognizes this soap from my description, or because you sent it to me, please let me know!  Thanks in advance!

Second shave on the Astra SP.  You should know by now that this is my go to blade.  This is the blade that I judge all other blades by.  So I expect great shaves with this blade, and typically get it.  BBS dome, face, and neck today.  No errors or much buffing needed.  That’s the way uh huh uh huh I like it, uh huh uh huh….

Beautiful morning today!  Bright sunny day, you’d almost think it was a Sunday morning.  Supposed to be awesome weather all week.. until Friday of course LOL  Well this is Michigan so, that’s to be expected.  Don’t like the weather?  Wait 15 minutes, and it will change 3 times! 😉

Another superb shave this morning!  I re-visited the Redneck soap today.  This soap intrigues me.  I love the performance.  The lather comes so easily and is dense and creamy.  Lots of cushion and slickness.  Definitely a good choice for a “daily driver”.  The only oddity for me is the scent.  I was told by the creator (of the soap, not God lol) that he was going for the smells of like an auto repair garage.  Which is an amazing concept.  But my nose just dosen’t get it.  Both times I have used this soap, all I can think of is wet magazines.  I know, I know.  But you know what?  I think it’s growing on me because I kind of like it.  It’s definitely an odd scent, but it’s familiar and somehow comforting.  If that was the original goal for this scent, then by jove I think he’s got it!

Second shave on the Kai blade.  These blades are fast moving up my favorites list.  They’ve already surpassed the 7 O’Clock Yellows, Gillette Silver Blues, and the Voskhods!  Coming up fast on my Personna Reds and maybe even my beloved Astra SPs!  What?  BLASPHEMY!!! We will see… lol  Ended up BBS on the dome and face, with near BBS on the neck.  Didn’t do any buffing to chase it…

Hump Day once again!!

SOTD 5/11 Just Like Candy

Pre: Shave Secret PSO

Razor:  ’38 – ’43 Gillette Black Handle Tech
Blade:  Gillette 7 O’Clock Black – Ninja (2)
Splash:  Wal-Mart 86% Witch Hazel
Post: Nivea Cooling Post Shave ASB & Master Well Bay Rum AS

Foggy morning!  Nice temps (low 60s) but visibility was definitely compromised.  It was actually eerily peaceful.  Of course it was still very soggy as we got dumped on all day Mother’s Day.  Speaking of that, I hope everyones mothers enjoyed their day, I know my Mom had a good time 🙂

Round 2 with Jeeves of Hudson Street.  This time Butterscotch.  And there were no surprises here, which speaks to the consistent quality the soap is produced with.  Great lather. Easily generated.  Excellent cushion.  Good slickness. This is a solid performing soap.  As per my initial review, my only “fault” with this soap is the scent is too light for me.  I could barely smell anything.  But trust me, that is a very MINOR gripe.  Based on the performance of this soap, it’s a gripe I can definitely live with 🙂

Second shave on the Ninja blade.  Still very sharp.  Mowed through a couple of days growth (i got lazy this weekend) like nobodys business.  If you haven’t tried the Gillette 7 O’Clock Black, you should.  Of the 7 O’Clock family of blades, IMO it’s the sharpest.  Followed by the Yellow, and then the Green.  The Yellows are the smoothest of the lot.  But as always, YMMV.  Ended up a silky BBS dome, face, and neck!  Great start to the week!

Have a great Monday!!
