Here comes the rain again.. woke up this morning channeling Annie Lennox.  We got drenched over night, and today are going to get hit by a huge cold front.  Fun right? The high temp for today occurred at MIDNIGHT, so it’s all colder from there.  Not looking forward to it.

So I was rumbling around in the bathroom last night and guess what I found stuck behind the shelves, hidden from view?  My Ogallala shaving stick!  I had totally forgotten about this gem!  Outta sight outta mind right?  Well I’m so glad I re-discovered this soap.  First the fragrance.  I love the scent of this soap.  A perfect blend of lemongrass and bay rum!  Just lemony enough without being overbearingly citrus-y.  And I love their take on the classic bay rum scent.  A tad sweet with a nice blend of spices.  Plus it’s a stick!  I love sticks for the convenience and because they are just plain fun to use.  I just rub it on the dome like a stick of butter.  Dosen’t take much, just a thin layer.  Then I pull out my big ole Omega 48 brush and massage up a smooth, slick lather!  The Omega generates and holds enough soap for 3 complete passes on the dome without reapplying the soap!  No bowl needed.  I really need to explore other stick soaps.  I know my favorite Arko has a stick version…

3rd shave on the Wilkinson.  Definitely has lost a lot of smoothness.  Stuttered a bit here and there on only 2 days growth.  Two days growth on my face/dome is probably like 12 hours growth on some of you guys LOL  Ended up BBS but paid for it with a couple of small weepers and some slight irritation over the ears.  Nothing major.  Just have to remember not to take the Sword blades past 2 shaves.

Have a great weekend!

Hello November!  Hate to see you so soon, but at least you showed up in a good mood right?  I started a bit early but I’m growing my facial hair for Movember (or No Shave November), whichever LOL  So now just shaving dome and neck.  Great morning walk today. I love getting up an hour later.  Feels like I got away with sleeping in 🙂

Great shave today.  I was lazy this past weekend so I had to deal with 3 days growth this morning.  Pulled out the Dragons Blood soap by Kells.  LOVE the scent of this soap.  Lathers easily and makes a nice smooth lather.  Not super dense, but has great cushion and slickness.  After shave skin feel is smooth and hydrated.  Definitely a recommendation if you haven’t tried a Kell’s soap.

I popped a sharp Wilkinson Sword blae into the WW2 Tech this morning.  Turns out to be a really good pairing.  The Sword is sharp and smooth, and the Tech is just aggressive enough to make mowing down 3 days growth nice & easy.  Very minor touch up in the usual spots.  No errors.  Ended up baby butt smooth dome and throat.  And that’s how she likes it 😉

SOTD 7/18 Fat Boys Are Back

07182015

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Grapefruit
Brush: Shea Moisture Synthetic Brush
Soap: Through The Fire Fine Craft Shaving Soap – Ignite
Razor: ’61 Gillette Adjustable “Fat Boy” aka Mr. Big Stuff
Blade: Gillette Wilkinson Sword(3)

Post: Nivea Sensitive Post Shave Lotion & Old Spice ReFresh Body Spray –  Wolfthorn

It’s hot.  And sticky.  And so humid.  Not ideal shaving conditions for me.  Even with the AC on, it’s still “damp” in my apartment.  So cold shower this morning after a short, hot, stiffling walk with Chico, who is currently sprawled out under the ceiling fan lol

I wanted a refreshing shave this morning so I pulled out the Ignite by Maria Arman.  This soap has an amazing scent.  I call it my fruit loops soap.  It also has fantastic performance, as all of Maria’s soaps do.  Awesome lather, great cushion, and good slickness.  I have yet to be disappointed by any of her products that I have tried.

Last shave on the Wilkinson blade in the Fat Boy.  A decent middle of the road blade.  Decently smooth, sharp enough.  Nothing spectacular about it but it’s a good solid workhorse kind of blade.  I’d rate it a step or so below the Astra SP, but it is a similar blade.

Time to order some more blades.  Any suggestions?

Monday! I know I’ve been slacking lately on the frequency of blog posts, mainly because life keeps popping up and pushing the priority of posting to the bottom of the pile.  But don’t worry, the blog continues and I have some great ideas that I am going to be implementing in the next 2-3 weeks so stay tuned!

Temps still in the teens but it felt decent this morning.  Bright & sunny with almost no wind.  Chico got to romp in the frozen snow drifts a little bit.  He actually enjoys snow when he’s not freezing LOL

Todays shave was a little rough.  Used a Wilkinson blade on it’s 3rd shave in the Black Beauty.  I knew it was probably pushing my luck going 3 shaves with this blade but you know me.  I had to try it.  Now I know.  And knowing is half the battle right?  GO JOE!!  lol  Ended up very near BBS but with a few tiny nicks here and there.  Nothing major.  Just annoying.  Witch hazel took care of the bleeding.  Didn’t need to pull out the styptic.

Still loving the London Barber soap.  I’m told there are a few other brand soaps that smell identical to this one.  I’m going to have to try a couple of them.  If the performance matches Maggards, we may have some contenders!  I am most likely going to order some soaps this week.  It’s been awhile.  I wanted to work through all of those samples I had. So now it’s time for more!  Hit me with suggestions!

SOTD 9/22 The Senator Likes It Cool

09222014

Pre: Shave Secret
Brush: VDH Kit Brush – Boar
Soap: Maggard Razors – Orange Menthol
Razor:  ’38-39 Gillette Senator TTO
Blade:  Gillette Wilkinson Sword(2)
Splash:  Thayers Natural Remedies Lemon Witch Hazel w/ Aloe Vera Astringent
Post: Nivea Sensitive ASB & Pinaud Clubman Classic

Great shave to kick off a new week!  It was time to to visit with the Senator again.  Didn’t want him to become too complacent lol

I think because I had just used the mild Super Speed Blue Tip, the Senator felt a tad bit aggressive.  Not uncomfortably so, but I definitely felt the blade on my dome.  The Wilkinson blade also felt a bit rough also.  Again,  not “bad” but just not as smooth as the first shave was, this being the second use on this blade.  So I pulled it after the shave.  No need to push my luck with this blade.  I have a whole new sampler I have yet to break into!

Finally used the last of my sample of Maggard Razors Orange menthol.  I really like this soap!  It’s a different consistency than the Lime & Bergamot.  It’s more solid, waxy.  Easy to scoop out of the sample jar and press into a bowl.  A great orange scent, more citrus than candy orange.  I’d rate the menthol on the lower side.  It’s there, but it takes a while to build up, and it doesn’t last very long.  None of that is a deal breaker for me.  I will definitely be ordering this.  I thought I didn’t have enough for this shave but I was gladly proven wrong.  Lot’s of lather from a quarter sized smidgen of soap.  Slightly thirsty soap but you are well rewarded for your efforts!

Ended up with a DFS.  Didn’t get as close as I wanted over my ears but didn’t want to push the blade.  Topped off with Pinaud.  Now of to work!  Chase your dreams!

SOTD 9/11 Senator Tobs

09112014

Pre: Maggard Razors PSO – Lime
Brush: Custom Boar by Steve Neon Barber Handle (The Force)

Razor:  ’38-39 Gillette Senator TTO
Blade:  Gillette Wilkinson Sword
Splash:  Wal-Mart Witch hazel 86%
Post: Nivea Sensitive ASB & Aqua Velva Classic Ice Blue

I figured it was time for another senate session.  He’s been on vacation long enough at taxpayers expense right? LOL  So I put the Senator to work this morning.  It was an interesting session.  For some reason, the shave wasn’t as smooth as I have remembered with that razor.  I guess “smooth” isn’t the right descriptor, as the Senator is definitely aggressive, but seemed more so today.  It’s very possible it was the blade although typically I get good shaves from the Wilkinson.  This morning it felt really “bitey” and aggressive.  Nicked me a couple times.  Just minor weepers but unexpected. I usually know just what I did wrong to get nicked but this morning I couldn’t figure it out.  I ended up with a close to BBS shave but I can tell there is some mild irritation on the back of my head and over my ears.  So maybe this blade/razor combo doesn’t work for me.  We will see…

Tobbs Almond!  I always gush about this cream because it is phenomenal.  LOVE. THIS. SOAP.  The scent just fills the entire bathroom.  Makes my mouth water!  And the scent stays throughout the shave, without interfering with the after shave at the end.  I used a bit more than usual this morning and the lather just exploded!  I really hated to rinse it away when I was finished.  I think I must have had a look on my face because suddenly Chico bolted out of the bathroom and hid under the bed LOL

It’s Thursday! Do a random act of kindness to a stranger!  Karma!

Soap: Arko Men – Cool
Razor: Maggard Razors MR3
Blade:  Gillette Wilkinson Sword (3)
Splash:  Wal-Mart Witch Hazel 86%
Post:  Brut Original Fragrance Moisturizing ASB & Aqua Velva Musk

Had a rough night.  Chico isn’t well and was restless all night.  Consequently I was awake most of the night.  So I was groggy, irritable, and feeling rushed this morning.  Surprisingly still eeked a decent shave!

I went with cold water to save time.  The Arko Men cream performed well.  Although I feel like the same amount made a bit more lather with hot water.  I’ll have to watch that a bit closer next time.  I like the Arko cream but it is really nothing like the Arko puck to me.  The lather is different, the scent is totally different.  As a matter of fact, I barely detect a scent at all.  Not a deal breaker.  This is another one of those soaps that the very low price point makes up for any minor negatives.  Overall a very decent value.

Last shave on the Wilkinson.  Still super sharp and very smooth.  Definitely can push this one past 3 shaves.  Combined with the MR3, I got a really close BBS shave with only a couple of tiny weepers.  Speaking of Maggards, I see that they have a new solid steel handle.  I want it!  I’m thinking about matching it up to the New I picked up last Sunday.  That sounds like a match made in heaven!  Hope your day was great!

SOTD 7/19/2014 Brushzilla Strikes Again…

07192014

Pre: Shave Secret
Brush: Omega 48 Pro Boar
Soap: Genuine Ogalalla Bay Rum Shave Stick – Bay Rum & Lemon Grass
Razor: Maggard Razors MR3
Blade: Gillette Wilkinson Sword
Splash:  Wal-Mart Witch Hazel 86%
Post:  Dove Men+Care ASB  & Aqua Velva Classic Ice Blue AS

Love that bay rum & lemongrass scent!  They go so great together!  Another great shave!  My only gripe with the Ogalalla stick is that it dries out kind of quick on the dome.  But I’m sure that is just me needing to get the hydration ratio just right.  Other than that, it performs very well.  Nice razor glide, lathers fairly easy on the dome, nice skin feel afterwards.  Did I mention it smells awesome?  Brushzilla likes it also 😉  The Omega really laps up and holds the lather.  Plus you gotta love the feel of the big boar brush on the dome!

I had tried the Wilkinson Sword in my Super Speed back in June and really liked it.  So I decided to try it again but in the more aggressive MR3.  I was not disappointed!  The blade was just as smooth and sharp as in the Super Speed.  I actually think the larger blade gap made it perform even better than the first time!  I had kind of forgotten about how good this blade is.  It’s definitely going on my favorite blades list.

Near BBS shave today.  I’ve been doing really well with “not chasing the baby” LOL  My shaves for the most part have been really close and error free.  Whenever I have a less that stellar shave its because something new has been introduced.  But I do it for you!  Well, I mostly do it because its fun and I love it 🙂  But you guys get to experience it with me!  Spend your weekend doing something YOU want to do!

Last shave on the Sword.  Still felt very sharp and actually a bit smoother than the first two shaves with it.  I’m tempted to try a 4th shave but eh..  The combo of the Proraso and the badger brush was very productive.  Lots of rich lather.  I don’t really get much scent wise from the Green & White but thats a minor thing.  On the third round of working through my soap samples.  Will be making final choices after this one.

The Wilkinson Sword is another super sharp blade!  But it felt really rough on my face.  I’ll try it one more time and if it still feels that way it’s dropping out of rotation.  The AOS lathered really well. Nice cushion.  I’m finding I really like the feel of the Omega, even though its huge.  I think it may actually be designed for face lathering.
